Football stars who support Liverpool: A story of what could’ve been…

Many of today’s mega footballers still have a soft spot for their favourite childhood clubs. It is not surprising to see so many still speaking of their dream or lost opportunities to play for Liverpool Football Club.  We take a look at some of the players who could’ve had their names sung by the Kop, but due to destiny unwritten, could not play for Liverpool.

It’ll also give you some sort of idea how small a budget Liverpool have to operate on compared to the likes of the Chelsea’s/City’s/United’s of this world. It is going to be very painful going through this list, knowing that these quality players are actual fans of the club.

Try to hold back the tears.

Sergio Kun Aguero

Man City’s record goalscorer is a Liverpool fan and could’ve joined Liverpool just as he entered into his prime football years.

“I have been a Liverpool fan for as long as I can remember and it would be a dream to play there”

Even now in the latter stages of what has already been a long and successful career, Liverpool fans would jump at the opportunity to see him lurking in the box at Anfield in the Red of Liverpool.

Delle Alli 

This wound is still very raw. The Spurs man is in the form of his life currently and continues to help his team keep the pressure on leaders Chelsea with brilliant performances every game he’s involved in. One of the biggest mistakes of Brendan Rodgers tenure, Alli was actually on trial at Liverpool. The Reds had first option to buy, but the now Celtic manager Rodgers decided he wasn’t the player that was needed at the time.  Ah, Brendan, What a kebab you were.

Kevin De Bruyne

A video recently showed 11-year-old De Bruyne talking about his love for Liverpool. City’s Midfield maestro would’ve been a real asset to Liverpool’s midfield with his fine passing, assists and goals. He was bought by Manchester City for £55 Million. Liverpool owners just do not have that kind of buying power, and that is the bottom line.

Leighton Baines 

He won’t get a lot of love nowadays because of his many years at Everton but Baines grew up supporting the Red team of Merseyside. The dramatic irony of the matter is that Liverpool have not had a decent left-back since Fabio Aurelio and it remains a continuous problem area for Jurgen Klopp. James Milner has filled in with some success but a Baines tearing down the left-flank and crossing as effectively as he does week in and week out would’ve definitely been appreciated at Anfield.

Robert Lewandowski

One of the deadliest strikers in world football over the last few years, Lewandowski famously almost joined Blackburn Rovers but was saved by a volcanic eruption.

His choice ultimately would’ve been Liverpool, a team he always supported. Now with his former

Dortmund boss at the helm at Liverpool, could he make the move? I doubt it. Would be nice though.

 Antoine Griezmann (?)

Not quite sure who he supports but last season saw a tremendous amount of curiosity flying into the direction the French striker when he regularly tweeted about Liverpool and in particular Roberto Firmino. He seems to be a fan of both and what a sight it would be if these two played up front for Liverpool. Defenders would be scared stiff, no doubt!

Liverpool came mightily close to signing Griezmann in 2011 for 7 Million pounds, which is pocket change to what his value is right now. The move didn’t materialise and the rest, as they say, is history. Now with Manchester United ready to break the bank to secure Griezmann’s services, will Liverpool owners FSG pay the hefty price tag to make a man’s dream come true?It remains to be seen.
