Four Premier League players that could catch the eye at the World Cup

There will be a lot of players that catch the eye over the next month at the World Cup. It is important not to overrate any individual based on their performances in Russia. The Premier League will have a number of players involved in the tournament, which isn’t a surprise considering the money involved in the English game now. The majority of signings are internationals and a lot of those will be representing their country at the World Cup. Here are four Premier League players that could impress this summer:

Harry Kane (England)

This could be a career-making summer for Tottenham striker Harry Kane. His manager, Gareth Southgate, has shown huge faith in him since taking the England job and that has been emphasised this summer with the award of the captaincy. It will be a test of the striker’s character to see how he deals with the extra responsibility. The next month will show us just how far he can go in the game. There is no doubting that he has the goal-scoring ability to join the ranks of the best in his position across Europe, it is now up to him to show it.

England have a relatively kind group with their first two matches coming against Tunisia and Panama. There is a great opportunity for them to gain confidence early and that could give them momentum going into the rest of the tournament. Kane has shown himself to be a confidence player and a goal in the first game will set him up for a positive tournament.

Bernardo Silva (Portugal)

Portugal will go into this summer’s competition with the hope of following up their Euro 2016 success with an even bigger triumph. There are some doubts regarding their ageing back-line, but they have some exciting attackers coming through to support Cristiano Ronaldo. Bernardo Silva suffered a serious injury before the Euros two years ago and missed out on winning an international tournament.

Silva will go into this summer with a point to prove and he has the talent to back that up. His first season with Manchester City was a learning curve and he will have grown under the tutelage of Pep Guardiola. Although he didn’t start as often as he would have liked, he contributed six goals and four assists in the Premier League, with a goal involvement every 152 minutes. There is a lot more to come from the attacker and at the age of 23, he could be ready to break out in Russia.

Aleksandar Mitrovic (Serbia)

This may be an odd choice, but Aleksandar Mitrovic could be ready for a huge tournament this summer. The striker has been on the sidelines under Rafa Benitez at Newcastle United, but he salvaged his World Cup dream with an excellent loan spell with Fulham. He helped them achieve promotion to the top-flight and showed that he was too good for the Championship.

During his loan spell, he managed to find the back of the net on 12 occasions, which was a major reason why Fulham won promotion. This summer, he has an opportunity to prove himself on a world stage and if he manages to do that, the interest in him will only increase. He knows that he could return to Craven Cottage on a permanent deal, but a player of his age and talent should be aiming for better. Newcastle hasn’t worked out, but Mitrovic remains a talent. This summer could prove that.

Wilfred Ndidi (Nigeria)

There are a lot of people that believe Nigeria could spring a surprise this summer and midfielder Wilfred Ndidi will play an important part if they do. The Leicester City player has been impressive since arriving in the Premier League and there is a belief that he could play at a higher level at some point during his career.

This summer provides a platform for Ndidi to show what he has on the world stage. Last season, he averaged 2.63 successful tackles and 1.5 interceptions per ninety minutes. In addition to that, he has impressed with his physicality, winning 61.24% of his aerial duels. No player will be looking forward to facing him in Russia and if he performs well, he could help his country get through the group.
