Man Utd’s Midfield | Stats & Analysis

There has been much uncertainty over Manchester United’s midfield this season. 10 different combinations have played in that position over the past 20 PL games. To add to that uncertainty, Manchester United have just re-signed Paul Scholes from retirement.

The uncertainty has been further increased through injuries which have forced players like Rafael and Rooney play out of position at times. Having considered the previous points who have been Manchester United’s best performers and who should be Manchester United’s first choice midfielders once every player is available?

Most consistent

The stats would suggest that Michael Carrick has been Manchester United’s most consistent performer with regards to defence and keeping possession. He shares Manchester United’s highest pass completion rate in the PL this season with the currently injured Tom Cleverley. Coincidentally, it’s the same pass completion rate as Paul Scholes last season.

Most creative

Despite being 38 years old, Ryan Giggs is by far the most creative central midfielder for Manchester United creating 1 chance for his teammates every 26 minutes. Compatively, Manchester City’s attacking midfielder David Silva has created 1 chance for his teammates every 26 minutes. His age means that he may not be around for a long time but he has most definitely evolved into a role that he had never played in previously.

Most defensive

It is hard to differentiate which player has bstatistically been the best defensively. Michael Carrick has won 70% of his ground 50/50’s, higher than any other player. Michael Carrick also makes more tackles per game than any other natural midfielder. Only Rafael has made more tackles per game than Michael Carrick, however in his solitary appearance he played at both central midfield and right back.

Best goal scoring threat

In terms of chances converted, Darren Fletcher is the midfielder with greatest goalscoring threat, however in his 8 appearances so far this season he has only attempted 2 shots. Striker Wayne Rooney, who has played at central midfield at times this season, has been the most prolific in front of goal with 13 goals this season.

First choice midfield combination

The stats suggests that a midfield combination of Carrick, Cleverley and Giggs would be the logical choice. Carrick offers great protection for the defense, Cleverley has done brilliantly in keeping possession and Giggs has been one of the best attacking outlets from central midfield in the Premier League this season.
