Jonny Grossmark

My first taste of football in a stadium was Gillingham V Aston Villa 1971 and I still have the programme which cost 5p. I have been lucky to have seen a number of Cup Finals but missed the Sunderland goal in 1973 as I was in the toliet. I have recently been watching Margate and also watch around 50 other matches a month on my computer .

Betting: Leeds 1 Chelsea 5 | Shots on Target Review

Betting: Leeds 1 Chelsea 5 | Shots on Target Review

As the game started at Elland Road the rain was falling. Some pundits expected Leeds to pressure Chelsea early on by employing the kind of fast tempo that the downpour might allow. The Yorkshire side did not disappoint in the opening minutes, easily controlling the first five or so. In the opening half both teams were quick to recycle possession and looked professional in their approach. El Hadji Diouf stood out, despite the fact that he has struggled to score …

Shots on Target & Goals Stats: Using Data Analysis to form betting decisions?

Many of you may have seen the movie (or read the book) Moneyball. The story charts Oakland A's general manager Billy Beane's attempt to put together a baseball club on a budget by employing computer-generated analysis, getting the most out of what were considered to be very average players. Can we transfer the idea of computer-generated analysis to our betting decisions? There are a few hundred betting websites, and many of them will have thousands of clients. Everyone wants to be a …

Di Matteo Fired by Chelsea | A look at goals, shooting & fight-back stats

When my uncle, Dr Clifford Grossmark, was chairman of Gillingham (1961-1983), he remortgaged his house so that Gillingham could buy a player. With the Russian oligarchs running a number of football clubs around the world, times have certainly changed for a lucky few. But is this good for football in the long run? Chelsea look unlikely to qualify from the group stage of the Champions League and will be the first team go out so early the year after lifting …
A Statistical Comparison between LFC 2008 (Rafa) v LFC 2012 (Rodgers)

A Statistical Comparison between LFC 2008 (Rafa) v LFC 2012 (Rodgers)

In the 2007-2008 season Liverpool finished 4th but way off the pace, 11 points behind the champions of that season, Man Utd. Nevertheless, there was huge optimism about being able to compete with United after Fernando Torres had an excellent season and bagged 24 goals in the Premiership. In 2008-2009, Liverpool purchased Philipp Degen, Andrea Dossena, Robbie Keane, and David N'Gog to bolster an already impressive squad of players. They opened the season with a 4-4-2 formation but quickly reverted …

How crucial is the first goal & the time of the first goal? | Stats

In this post I am looking at how often a team Win , Lose  or Draw when scoring or conceding the first goal. I also want to look further into the time of the first goal so offer an info-graphic to show the time of the first goal in 15 minute bands. We can look at the limitations first which is that there have only been 11 games played by the majority of teams but I am looking for trends …

Is possession always nine tenths of the law? | Stats Analysis

Celtic beat Barcelona 2-1 in the Champions League. If you did not see the game and looked at the data you would have been confused on the basis that Barcelona had 84% Possession and still managed to lose. If we look at the Barcelona data for the game we can see that they had 25 shots, so in relation to possession, that is one shot per 3.36% of possession. Celtic won the game by restricting the amount of shots on …

Betting Tips | Trading a game | How long can your team hold the lead?

In this post I am going to explore the average time it takes a Premier League team to fight back from a goal down, comparing this to the average time that a Premier League team tends to hang on to a lead. Arsenal minus RVP | Statistical Analysis of the Gunners in 12/13

Arsenal minus RVP | Statistical Analysis of the Gunners in 12/13

It's clear from Arsenal's odds for winning the league, which currently stand at 40/1, that they are having far from a vintage season. Indeed, in terms of Premiership aspirations, it seems like the Gunners' campaign is virtually over already. In order to find out where Arsenal's problems might lie, I have compared their games so far this season with data for the corresponding games last season (ignoring the Man Utd game, as I cannot see any value in looking at a game …
