Rob Edwards; The key to Luton Town’s chances of Premier League survival

After picking up four points from a possible six in January, the chances of Luton Town staying up this season seem to have greatly increased.

The Hatters were favourites to go down at the start of the season and were widely regarded as the weakest team of the three promoted in 2023. That is no longer the case. And it appears that even the bookmakers now agree Luton is no longer the weakest team. Although, they still see them as one of the three favourites to go down.

Latest Premier League Betting

Sheffield United are now 1/200 to go down. Despite scoring more goals since Chris Wilder returned to the club in December, the Blades still concede too many. Burnley are 1/14 in the latest football odds to be relegated, with Luton at 4/7 and Everton at 10/3.

At the other end of the table, Manchester City are still the favourites. Pep’s team are 4/6 in the latest Premier League winner odds. City’s closest rivals are Liverpool at 11/5, with Arsenal out to 5/1.

Interestingly for Luton, they haven’t done too badly when they’ve faced the Premier League’s top two. Against Liverpool, Luton drew 1-1. And when they faced City, the Hatters went into a 1-0 lead but eventually lost 2-1.

What is the secret of Luton’s success?

The man who seems to be the driving force behind Luton’s attempts to stay up this season is their manager, Rob Edwards. The Welshman is only in his second season at Kenilworth Road, and already he has achieved anything way beyond any Luton Town fan’s wildest dreams.

But what is Edwards doing differently from Burnley and Sheffield United? Two teams that finished 21 and 11 points, respectively, above Luton in the Championship last season.

Experience is vital

Luton aren’t just a team of kids. Far from it. Manager Rob Edwards has brought in the experienced duo of Ross Barkley and Andros Townsend to help give his team some Premier League know-how.

Barkley in particular, clicked immediately with his new teammates. And now it appears that the 30-year-old former Everton and Chelsea midfielder is pulling the strings, getting the best out of Elijah Adebayo and Carlton Morris.

Carlton Morris is the man who fired Luton back to the Premier League. In the 2022/23 season in the Championship, Morris scored 20 times in 44 matches. Life hasn’t been as easy for him in the Premier League. But he is still an integral part of the Luton team.

Also playing his part is Elijah Adebayo. Adebayo has been an inspiration. He already has more Premier League goals this season than he scored in 42 Championship games last season.

But the key point is the duo are experienced. Adebayo is 26, and Morris is 28. And along with Ross Barkley and Andros Townsend, they have given Luton Town a great chance of surviving.

Manager of the Year Award for Edwards?

More often than not, the boss of the team who wins the Premier League wins the Manager of the Year Award. This year, Rob Edwards has to be in the running.

If the Welshman can keep Luton in the Premier League, he will be a serious candidate to beat Pep, Jurgen, or whoever. And regardless of whether he does or not, Edwards is one heck of an asset for Luton Town.
