In a match that was dominated by Arsenal for large parts of the game, it still came as a bitter blow to Newcastle, as it looked like they would hold out for a draw, only for Thomas Vermaelen to score a last gasp winner deep into injury time.

Newcastle lined up 4-4-1-1, with Ben Arfa replacing the injured Ryan Taylor on the right-wing and Cisse dropped to the bench and Obertan playing just off Demba Ba – Obertan playing in a similar role against Arsenal when he came off the bench in the first game of the season.

Arsenal enjoy success attacking down the right

There were some injury doubts to Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain after their 3-0 win against AC Milan, but both recovered in time to give Arsenal speed and impetus down the flanks.

Although Oxlade-Chamberlain has gained many plaudits in recent weeks with his performances, Danny Simpson did a sterling job keeping the 18-year-old quiet throughout the game. Simpson won 6 out of 9 ground duels (67%), won 80% of his tackles (4 out of 5) and won his solitary aerial duel. Adding to that, Simpson made his obligatory clearance off the line – an incredible 6th of the season.
