A few nights ago the PFA Player of the Year awards were held and we saw an English sweep, with Phil Foden winning the Player of the Year and Cole Palmer Young Player. As the season has now just kicked off, one of my favourite things to do is watch all the young players who are rising in the ranks.
A lot of the young players in the Premier League today are the future of the division and like the past 3 winners, I think the next winner won’t be any different. I expect one of the players I mentioned today will win it soon, but, to make this more interesting, I am going to avoid naming players who have already won it before.Â
Omari HutchinsonÂ
Starting very rogue, Hutchinson is a shout that few people will make and that could be a big mistake, even now if you look at betting on Premier League 24/25, Hutchinson’s name will most likely not come up. I think this is harsh, we saw Ipswich defy the odds in the Championship last year and they have done really well in the transfer this summer.Â
Securing a new contract for Kieran McKenna and signing Hutchinson permanently was a massive show of intent and I think if Ipswich stay up and Hutchinson has a similar impact to the one he had last year, he should be in the conversation. Â
Kobbie Mainoo
If you asked the majority of Premier League fans who the favourite for the PFA Young Player of the Year is, the majority of people will most likely say Kobbie Mainoo. He came into the Man United squad fairly late last year and was the diamond in the rough, even scoring in the FA Cup final to beat rivals Manchester City.Â
The overall success he has had so far has been fantastic and the impact the 19-year-old has had is outstanding. If he gets a full season under his belt, I think he will end the year as the favourite for the award.
Morgan Rogers
In February 2024, Morgan Rogers arrived at Aston Villa from Middlesbrough and the move was met with lukewarm reactions. He was a shining light for Middlesbrough and his start of the season was strong. When Villa came knocking everyone knew he would accept. After starting slowly and quite poorly, he started to really pick up steam near the end of the campaign.Â
The move started to click and now he is one of the first names on Emery’s team sheet. He started the first game of the season against West Ham and played the full 90 minutes outlasting Watkins and McGinn in the process.Â
This is a clear statement from Emery that he trusts the young player and consistent minutes andÂ
A good season could result in the young player getting his hands on this award.
Honourable Mentions
Several young players could light up the league this year and it’s an exciting time to be a fan watching this season. To cover my own back here I am going to mention a few more players who could be in the running.
Yankuba Minteh
When Brighton makes a signing I expect them to be good and when they spend big like they did on Minteh, I have full faith in his ability. With a new manager and style for the Eagles to learn and Minteh coming off a great season with Feyenoord, he will be full of confidence and ready to light the league up.Â
Crysencio Summerville
The best player in the Championship last season has been signed by West Ham who have had a fantastic summer with an overhaul in the squad and manager. Now, I don’t think West Ham will be pushing for a European spot but I think Summerville will be very well utilised by the Irons and be a great success story.
