Chelsea’s Injury Concerns Grow as Key Fixtures Approach

Chelsea’s troubles continue to mount, both on the pitch and in the treatment room. A 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa last weekend was another frustrating chapter in what has been an inconsistent campaign for Enzo Maresca’s side. Despite leading through Enzo Fernandez’s well-taken goal, defensive lapses proved costly once more.

With just two wins in ten Premier League outings, Chelsea find themselves in a precarious position. A top-four finish remains possible, but improvement is needed swiftly. A home match against struggling Southampton presents a chance to regain momentum, yet injuries threaten to disrupt Maresca’s plans once again.

Here’s the latest on Chelsea’s injury situation, including return timelines for some of their key players.

Trevoh Chalobah: Fitness Worry in Defence

Already struggling for depth in central defence, Chelsea suffered another setback when Trevoh Chalobah was forced off at Villa Park with a back issue. With European commitments looming, Maresca will be desperate for good news regarding the defender’s availability.

Speaking after the match, Maresca provided a measured response on Chalobah’s condition:

“I’m not sure at the moment with Trev,” he admitted. “We will see. It is early so we will see tomorrow. It looks quite good now but I don’t know.”

While the initial signs suggest it may not be a long-term absence, his status remains uncertain.

Expected Return Date: Unknown

Noni Madueke: Hamstring Setback

Noni Madueke’s absence has been keenly felt, with the winger forced off in the first half against Brighton due to a hamstring issue. Having shown flashes of his quality, his enforced spell on the sidelines is another setback for Chelsea’s attacking fluidity.

The 22-year-old sustained the injury while surging down the right flank and delivering a cross for Cole Palmer. His reaction was immediate—pulling up before sinking to the turf in visible discomfort.

Ahead of the Villa clash, Maresca confirmed Madueke is expected to remain out until after the March international break.

“Fortunately, we don’t have any update in terms of the ones that are injured—it’s the same group,” Maresca stated. “We don’t have any additions. Noni probably will be out until the international break.”

Expected Return Date: April 2025

Nicolas Jackson: Long-Term Hamstring Injury

Chelsea’s frontline has also been dealt a significant blow with Nicolas Jackson sidelined due to a hamstring injury. Initially, there was optimism that the issue would not be severe, but further scans painted a different picture.

Maresca clarified the situation, confirming that Jackson is expected to be out until after the international break in March.

“Nico will be out until the international break, probably available after that,” he explained. “We knew it was a muscular problem, but we did not know how important it was because his reaction was quite good. We did not think it was a big injury. Unfortunately, he had a scan a few days ago, and it is an important one. It will be around six to eight weeks.”

Expected Return Date: April 2025

Romeo Lavia: Recovery Process Underway

Romeo Lavia’s unfortunate luck with injuries has continued, with the midfielder sustaining a muscle problem in January’s draw with Bournemouth.

Maresca recently provided a small update, confirming Lavia is still in the process of returning to full fitness but offered no definitive timeline for his comeback.

Expected Return Date: Unknown

Marc Guiu: Facing Extended Spell Out

Chelsea’s young forward Marc Guiu suffered what Maresca described as a “bad” injury against West Ham. The extent of the problem remains unclear, but the manager admitted the Spaniard could be out for “weeks or months.”

Wesley Fofana: Training Resumption Offers Hope

There is finally some positive news regarding Wesley Fofana, who is edging closer to a return after a prolonged spell out with a hamstring injury. Having been absent since December, early concerns suggested the defender might miss the remainder of the campaign. However, Maresca has now confirmed that Fofana is back in training and progressing well.

“Wes Fofana started to work with us two days ago,” Maresca revealed. “That means he still needs two or three weeks to be 100 per cent fit. But at least he has started to work with us.”

Expected Return Date: April 2025

Benoît Badiashile: Still in Recovery Phase

Another defensive absentee, Benoît Badiashile, remains in the recovery phase of his rehabilitation. The Frenchman has yet to return to full training, and while no firm timeline has been set, Chelsea will be hopeful he can contribute before the season draws to a close.
