Dr Plumley explained the significance of the revenue boost Sunderland are set to receive: “For Sunderland, it will be a minimum of £120million up-lift in revenue in one season.” That number is staggering. For a club whose revenue has hovered around £38 million over the past two seasons, the injection of top-flight money is truly transformational.
“That’s linked into the TV broadcasting money and also an increase in commercial and sponsorship revenue,” he added. These streams of income will allow Sunderland to invest wisely — in players, facilities and infrastructure — but also give them a financial cushion to stabilise in the league.
Promotion is a reward in itself, but the real goal now becomes sustainability. As Dr Plumley puts it, “If you stay up you’re looking at another £100million, but if you go down you do have parachute payments to soften that blow a bit.”
