Aston Villa come back in vain against Chelsea | Petrov profiled

Aston Villa lost 4-2 at home to Chelsea in a game that was definitely a game of 2 halves with Villa not really getting involved during the first half.  Chelsea were allowed to have a large amount of possession during the first half and took an early lead on 9 minutes thanks to Daniel Sturridge.

Chelsea went into the dressing room in good spirits and following the restart and doubled their advantage over Aston Villa as Branislav Ivanovic scored on 51 minutes.

Aston Villa appeared to have woken up following the 2 goal lead which Chelsea had managed to get and turned the game on its head late on in the game with a double goal salvo in the space of 3 minutes.  Villa clawed a goal back with a James Collins header from a long throw in-front of the Holte-End and then Aston Villa, quite dramatically, drew level with a goal from Eric Lichaj.

Aston Villa thought they had secured a point against Chelsea but Villa’s persistence became the Villa’s downfall with momentum to get the winner they allowed Chelsea to counter effectively.  In the final 10 minutes of the game Chelsea bagged themselves 2 goals as Bransilav Ivanovic got his second of the game and Chelsea’s third.  Fernando Torres scored Chelsea fourth and final goal of the game bringing to an end his 6 month Premier League goal drought.

The overall possession stats read 55.7% in favour Chelsea compared to Aston Villa’s 44.3% – pretty poor for the home side.

Stephen Ireland yet again put in another great appearance for Aston Villa willing to get stuck in and help the team.  Stephen Ireland managed a 85% from an attempted 47 passes compared to a completed total of 40.

Aston Villa managed to complete 250 passes out of possible 325 attempts giving themselves a 77% pass completion.  Chelsea on the other hand managed 351 completed passes out of 443 attempts. Click to go to the next page with some Stilian Petrov stats for this season.
