Arsenal Push for Julian Alvarez Transfer as Atletico Madrid Stance Shapes Summer Window
Arsenal are accelerating their efforts to land Julian Alvarez before pre-season, with the striker emerging once again as the club’s leading attacking objective. According to Independent, the north London side are trying to move quickly while the market around the Argentina international appears to have narrowed.
The timing is notable. Alvarez, now 26, delivered a major World Cup moment on Sunday, scoring “the extra-time winner for Argentina in their 3-1 win over Switzerland with a brilliant curling long-range strike”. That contribution only sharpened attention on a player Arsenal have tracked closely for some time.

The report states that “Alvarez has long been Mikel Arteta’s main attacking target”, even if Arsenal have had to explore alternatives while the deal remained difficult. Bradley Barcola was among the names considered, yet that route currently looks complicated too, with PSG intent on keeping him.
What appears to have shifted, at least for now, is the level of competition. Alvarez is said to be “open to an Arsenal move” although “his preference had been to stay in Spain, with either Barcelona or Real Madrid.” Atletico Madrid, however, are “insistent on not selling to either of their rivals”, a firm position that has altered the landscape.
Atletico Madrid valuation still key hurdle
There is still a sizeable gap to bridge. Arsenal “don’t want to go above £90m, whereas Atletico want north of £100m.” That remains the central challenge in negotiations, particularly with sporting director Andrea Berta working on a deal involving his former club.
The wider market has also had an effect. “The situation may well change again when the dust settles on a chaotic World Cup, but Arsenal are currently pushing on Alvarez.” In a summer where elite deals have been slowed by multiple moving parts, Arsenal seem keen to act before conditions shift once more.
The same report adds that Arsenal “remain hopeful of securing Morgan Rogers, too, but the World Cup has slowed what was already a protracted transfer.” For now, though, Alvarez is the headline pursuit and arguably the one that would most clearly elevate Arteta’s front line.

From an Arsenal supporter’s perspective, this is exactly the sort of move the club should be pursuing. Julian Alvarez feels like a forward who can change the complexion of the attack, someone with elite-level pedigree, relentless work rate and the kind of edge needed in the biggest matches. If he truly is Arteta’s main target, then there is encouragement in seeing Arsenal push decisively rather than drift.
The biggest reason for optimism is that the deal now looks more realistic than it did earlier in the window. If Barcelona and Real Madrid are effectively blocked, Arsenal have a genuine opening. That does not mean it will be easy, especially with Atletico holding firm over the fee, but this is where Arsenal need to show conviction. A player of Alvarez’s calibre was never going to be available cheaply.
There will be supporters who hesitate at anything above £90m, and that is understandable. Still, if the club believe he is the missing piece, this is the level of investment required. Arsenal have built a squad capable of competing, but the final step often comes down to adding one ruthless, high-class attacker.
There is also something reassuring about the club continuing to work on Morgan Rogers while pressing for Alvarez. That suggests ambition and planning, not a one-track gamble. For hopeful Arsenal fans, the message is simple, get the striker in, get him in before pre-season, and give this squad the strongest possible platform for a serious title push.
