If his contract really is running down, then keeping him without a clear renewal path would be risky. Everton cannot afford to let assets drift.

The Norgaard move makes sense in the short term. He brings experience, leadership and reliability, and if David Moyes wants trusted Premier League know-how in the middle of the pitch, it is easy to see the appeal. The question supporters will ask is whether the balance is right between immediate stability and long-term growth.

Johnston, though, feels especially interesting.
