Arsenal Injury Blow as Louie Copley Confirms ACL Rupture in Pre-Season
Arsenal have a clear early setback from pre-season, and for Louie Copley it is a brutal one. The 19-year-old has confirmed he suffered an ACL rupture after the injury he picked up in the 3-1 defeat against Real Betis.
Copley had only just started to edge into the senior picture. This was his second first-team appearance of the summer, and another chance to show Mikel Arteta he could be useful around the squad heading into the new campaign. Instead, the evening turned in a matter of minutes.
Introduced at half-time, Copley lasted only nine minutes before going down with what quickly looked serious. He received lengthy treatment and eventually left the pitch in distress. Arteta did not need much time to realise the signs were bad. He said: “We’re quite worried for the kid because the mechanism doesn’t look very positive, the symptoms that he already has. So we’re going to have to wait and see for tomorrow’s scan. And yeah, touch wood that he’s not that bad.”

The scan has now confirmed Arsenal’s fears. Copley posted: “Words can’t describe how I’m feeling right now, to making my pre-season debut for the team I’ve grown up supporting to finding out I’ve ruptured my ACL. The road ahead won’t be easy but I’ll give everything to come back stronger and better.”
That is the reality of a serious knee injury. Momentum stops, plans change, and a young player is left focusing on rehab rather than development. There is no soft way to dress it up.

The response from inside the Arsenal dressing room was immediate. Declan Rice replied with a love heart emoji. Ben White, Max Dowman and Tommy Setford did the same, while Jurrien Timber posted a praying emoji. It is a small gesture, but one that matters when a teenager is dealing with a long lay-off.

Copley had been building towards a significant season. He made his first senior outing earlier in pre-season against Girona and had also been named on the bench in the Champions League last term for Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Club Brugge. A loan spell at Crawley Town then brought nine League Two appearances in the second half of the season.
Now the priority is simple. Recover properly, recover fully, and start again. For Arsenal, it is a pre-season injury blow. For Copley, it is far more personal.
