Manchester City Agree £1.7m Geronimo Rulli Transfer From Marseille

Manchester City have moved swiftly to reshape their goalkeeping department, agreeing a £1.7 million deal with Marseille for Geronimo Rulli.
According to Sky Sports, the 34 year old is set to sign a two year contract at the Etihad Stadium, providing experienced cover for Gianluigi Donnarumma next season.
Rulli arrives following James Trafford’s club record transfer to Leeds United for an initial £40 million. Financially, the sequence of deals represents striking business from City, bringing in an established international goalkeeper for a fraction of Trafford’s fee.

From an expectant Manchester City supporter’s perspective, this looks like remarkably sensible squad management.
Losing James Trafford might disappoint some supporters, particularly given his potential, but an initial £40 million represents enormous money for a goalkeeper who was unlikely to displace Donnarumma immediately. City have effectively converted that situation into a significant transfer profit while securing an experienced replacement for only £1.7 million.
Rulli also understands what being part of an elite squad requires. At 34, he arrives with considerable experience and should have no illusions about his position in the hierarchy. Donnarumma is clearly the leading goalkeeper, so City need somebody capable of stepping in without creating unnecessary uncertainty around the role.
That matters across a long season. Injuries, suspensions and fixture congestion can quickly turn a supposed backup goalkeeper into an important figure.
There will naturally be questions about whether City should have retained Trafford and continued developing him. His move to Leeds provides the opportunity to play regularly, something he needs at this stage of his career.
For City, the mathematics are compelling. Receive £40 million initially for Trafford, spend £1.7 million on Rulli, maintain experienced cover and redirect resources elsewhere.
Supporters will judge Rulli when called upon, but as squad building goes, this appears measured, economical and extremely difficult to criticise.
