Hall is a huge talent, already looks at home on Tyneside, and there should be no appetite to entertain approaches. This is exactly where Newcastle need to be as a club, strong enough to keep top young players without blinking.

Second, the Anthony Gordon reference is another reminder of how far Newcastle have come. A player once viewed by some as a gamble is now being discussed in connection with one of Europe’s biggest clubs, and that says plenty about his development and Newcastle’s coaching environment. Supporters will love that.

As for Rashford, he is clearly a gifted player, but this does not feel like a Newcastle move. The wages, the noise and the uncertainty would make it a difficult fit.
