From a Hull City perspective, this feels like exactly the sort of deal we should be making after promotion.

Gelhardt earned his chance to play Premier League football with us. Fourteen league goals, plus another in the play-offs, is a serious contribution, and he became an important part of a side that achieved something special last season.

There is also a lot to be said for continuity. We already know what he can do, he understands the manager, the dressing room and the way we want to play. That removes a lot of the uncertainty that normally comes with summer recruitment.

Of course, the Premier League will be a different level. Defenders will be quicker, stronger and more experienced, and Gelhardt will have to prove that he can translate his Championship form into goals at the highest level.

As a Hull supporter, though, I would much rather see us back a player who has already delivered for the club than immediately replace him with someone simply because they have a bigger reputation.

At 24, there should still be development to come as well. He has already shown that he can handle pressure, score important goals and contribute when the stakes are high.

If the fee is sensible, this looks like very good business. Gelhardt helped get Hull back into the Premier League, and he deserves the opportunity to show he belongs there with us.
