It is easy to see the logic on the surface. Villa may lose their main striker, they need a replacement, and Zirkzee is available.
The problem is that availability and suitability are not the same thing.
Zirkzee’s numbers at Manchester United are poor for a centre-forward expected to make a difference in the Premier League. Five league goals in 56 appearances across two seasons tells its own story. Nine in 75 in all competitions is no better. Those are not the returns of a striker ready to replace a player of Watkins’ level, volume and reliability.

Unai Emery may believe coaching can revive him. Managers often back themselves to unlock a player others have failed to maximise. Zirkzee is 25, not 19, so this is not a developmental punt dressed up as strategy. If Villa move, they would be betting on a reset, not potential.

The timing is awkward. Villa have opened 2026-27 with a 4-0 defeat to Brighton, and the squad already looks short on certainty in attack. Emiliano Buendia led the line in that match, Alejandro Garnacho came on later, Brian Madjo is injured, and Tammy Abraham was unavailable. That is not a stable picture before facing Arsenal.
If Watkins leaves, Villa cannot afford sentiment or wishful thinking. Zirkzee has talent, but talent without output quickly becomes an expensive excuse. Villa need goals, presence and reliability. Right now, Zirkzee looks more like a gamble than an answer.

From a disappointed Aston Villa supporter perspective, this report feels underwhelming. If Watkins is going, then replacing him with someone who has struggled badly for goals in England does not exactly inspire confidence. You can talk about systems, confidence and coaching all you want, but strikers are judged on output. Villa would be losing one of the most dependable forwards in the league and potentially bringing in a player who has not looked comfortable at Manchester United.
That is the core of the frustration. This is a massive moment for the club. Villa should be building on recent progress, not hoping a player who has already failed to adapt in the Premier League suddenly clicks because the shirt is different. Emery is a top coach, no question, but even top coaches need players who can deliver now.
The 4-0 defeat to Brighton already set a miserable tone. Supporters want a reaction, and transfer links like this do not feel like one. They feel like compromise. If the club bank serious money from Watkins, fans will expect ambition, not another project. Zirkzee may yet prove people wrong, but from a Villa perspective this looks like a move that carries more risk than reassurance. Right now, that is the last thing supporters want.
