Martinez is considered available after Aston Villa signed Zion Suzuki from Parma for about £30m. Villa and Chelsea already know each other’s numbers. Martinez would bring presence, authority and personality. He is experienced, confrontational in the right way and fully comfortable handling pressure. Chelsea have enough young players already. There is a real argument for adding somebody who has lived through major finals, hostile atmospheres and title-level expectations.

The obvious question is age. At 33, Martinez is not a long-term fix. But Chelsea do not necessarily need a decade-long answer in every position. Sometimes you need a strong four-year solution that stabilises the team and raises standards immediately. If Penders is highly rated, learning behind a keeper like Martinez could be useful.

The other point is simple. If Alonso truly wants to build a serious side quickly, he cannot spend months pretending the goalkeeper issue will solve itself. Elite teams are ruthless about weak spots. Chelsea should be too. If the numbers make sense and the medical checks are sound, this feels like a move worth pushing.
