Tottenham Sign Mykhailo Mudryk on Loan as Roberto De Zerbi Reunites With Former Winger
Tottenham have moved decisively again in an already lavish summer window, bringing Mykhailo Mudryk across London on loan from Chelsea until the end of the season, with an option to make the deal permanent for £75m. It is the sort of transfer that immediately invites scrutiny, intrigue and, for Spurs supporters, plenty of curiosity about how Roberto De Zerbi plans to use a player whose career has drifted badly off course in recent seasons.
There is familiarity at the heart of the move. De Zerbi knows Mudryk well from their time together at Shakhtar Donetsk, when the winger’s pace, direct running and flair marked him out as one of Europe’s most exciting young attackers. Tottenham are clearly betting that the head coach who helped shape that early rise can now revive it.

Mudryk transfer gives Spurs another attacking weapon
Tottenham’s recruitment this summer has carried real force. Mudryk becomes the club’s ninth signing, taking spending beyond £300m, and there may yet be more movement before the window closes, with Tosin Adarabioyo also expected to arrive from Chelsea on a permanent deal. For a club under De Zerbi, the intention is obvious. Spurs want options, depth and explosiveness, especially in the wide areas.
This pursuit gathered pace after Tottenham missed out on other targets. Iliman Ndiaye has joined Manchester City from Everton, while Cody Gakpo was another name they could not land. Mudryk then emerged as a late solution, although it would be wrong to frame him as a simple fallback. De Zerbi’s presence changes the equation completely, because this is a coach who has a precise understanding of the player’s strengths and weaknesses.
The Tottenham boss said: “Having worked with Misha earlier in his career, I know exactly what he can bring to our team. He has the quality to change a game with his speed and ability in one-vs-one situations, and is an exciting, attacking talent.
“I will demand a lot from Misha and it is our job to help him find the best version of himself. If we do that then he can become a very important player for us. I am very happy he chose to come here, and I cannot wait to work with him again.”
Chelsea spell leaves plenty for Tottenham to unlock
For all the excitement around the Tottenham move, Mudryk arrives with obvious questions attached. Chelsea signed him from Shakhtar in 2023 for an initial £61m after strong interest from several elite clubs, including Arsenal. At that stage he looked like a thrilling long-term investment, a winger capable of stretching matches on his own.
What followed was far less convincing. Mudryk managed 10 goals and 11 assists in 73 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea, numbers that only tell part of the story. His adaptation to English football was uneven, his role changed repeatedly and his confidence often looked fragile. By the time Chelsea had cycled through different managerial voices before eventually turning to Xabi Alonso, the player still had not secured the kind of authority expected from such an expensive signing.
There were flashes. He showed promise in Europe, had moments of genuine incision and ended his first full campaign with seven goals and four assists. Yet he never truly became central to Chelsea’s attacking identity.
Doping case resolution opens fresh start
The biggest interruption to his career came away from the pitch. Mudryk had not played a competitive match since November 2024 after a doping case led to a lengthy absence. He had returned an “adverse finding” for meldonium, was given a four-year ban by the FA, and then appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
That process concluded last month, allowing him to return immediately after the disciplinary proceedings were resolved and a suspension equal to time already served was accepted. Throughout the case, Mudryk maintained he had “never knowingly or intentionally” taken a banned substance. He also said he was “grateful” to be able to return after “the most difficult period” of his career.
That context matters. Tottenham are not simply signing a winger in search of sharper form, they are taking on a player trying to rebuild rhythm, belief and reputation in one go.
De Zerbi reunion could define Tottenham gamble
This is why the move feels so fascinating. In the right environment, Mudryk remains a devastating profile, quick over distance, sharp in one-v-one situations and capable of turning sterile possession into panic for defenders. Tottenham, under De Zerbi, should offer him structure and licence in equal measure.
Whether Spurs trigger that £75m option will depend on far more than highlights. They will want consistency, tactical discipline and evidence that Mudryk can influence Premier League matches regularly. For now, Tottenham have given themselves a potentially high-upside solution without committing immediately to a permanent fee.
If De Zerbi can reconnect Mudryk with the confidence and aggression that once made him such a coveted talent, this could become one of the most compelling stories of the season. If not, it will stand as another expensive reminder of how fragile promise can be at the top level. Either way, Tottenham have made a bold call, and one that says plenty about how their head coach wants this team to play.
