Arsenal Weigh £80m Raphinha Move as January Transfer Window Plan Takes Shape

Arsenal are understood to be exploring a move for Barcelona winger Raphinha ahead of the January transfer window, with Fichajes reporting that the north London club are considering an offer worth around €80m for the Brazil international.

The 29-year-old has emerged as a serious option after Arsenal ended the summer without adding another senior forward. That situation has become more pressing following the departures of Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli, two exits that have materially altered Mikel Arteta’s attacking depth heading into the 2026/27 campaign.

Arsenal transfer plans sharpen in attack

Arsenal did pursue attacking solutions earlier in the market, including interest in Julian Alvarez, but the forward remained at Atletico Madrid. In the end, Christos Tzolis arrived as the only major attacking addition, leaving a feeling that more was required out wide and across the frontline.

That backdrop helps explain why Raphinha is now firmly on the agenda. He brings proven Premier League experience, elite-level output and the flexibility to operate across multiple attacking roles. Those attributes are clearly attractive for a club that has invested heavily elsewhere and may now feel a further attacking injection is required to sustain a title challenge.

There is, however, an obvious difficulty. Barcelona hold a strong contractual position. Raphinha is tied down until 30 June 2028 and his release clause stands at €1bn, which makes any January negotiation entirely dependent on the Catalan club’s willingness to engage.

Raphinha form strengthens Barcelona stance

From Barcelona’s perspective, there is little immediate incentive to entertain offers. Raphinha renewed his deal in May 2025 after delivering outstanding numbers across the previous season, scoring 34 goals and providing 25 assists in 56 appearances. That level of production alone would make him difficult to replace.

His start to the current campaign has only reinforced his value. In the opening rounds of LaLiga, he has already hit five goals in three matches, including a brace in Barcelona’s 5-2 win over Rayo Vallecano. Across his time at the club since arriving in 2022, he has registered 77 goals in 192 games, a return that underlines both consistency and durability.

The arrival of Gabriel Jesus at Barcelona does not appear to alter that picture. Jesus has joined to strengthen the forward line, while Raphinha remains a key attacking figure who can be used in different roles by Hansi Flick. Internally, that versatility adds to his importance.

For Arsenal, the next step is whether exploratory interest becomes a formal approach when the window opens. An €80m proposal would represent a substantial commitment, yet it may still fall short if Barcelona decide Raphinha is untouchable during the season.

As things stand, this looks like a situation to monitor rather than one nearing resolution. Arsenal’s need is understandable, the player profile fits, and the finances being discussed show intent. Whether that translates into a deal may depend less on Arsenal’s admiration and more on Barcelona reaching a point where they are prepared to listen.

From an unconvinced Arsenal supporter’s perspective, this report raises as many questions as it answers. Raphinha is clearly a top player, and nobody would deny his quality, output or experience. If Arsenal signed him, he would improve the squad. That part is straightforward.

The doubt comes with the price, the timing and the wider logic. Spending €80m in January on a 29-year-old winger under a long Barcelona contract feels like the kind of move a club makes when it has run out of cleaner options. Arsenal have already committed major money in recent windows, so supporters are entitled to wonder why the squad still appears short in attack after so much investment.

There is also the question of priority. If the club failed to land another forward in the summer, why did it get to that point in the first place? Waiting until January usually means paying more, negotiating from a weaker position and trying to prise away a key player from a club that has no obvious reason to sell.

Raphinha would excite fans, of course, but this feels more complicated than a simple statement signing.
