Chelsea Team News vs Arsenal: Moises Caicedo Fitness Concern Clouds Xabi Alonso Plans
Chelsea go to the Emirates on Sunday with six points from six, and with a familiar problem already hanging over them. Moises Caicedo is again fighting to be fit, and Xabi Alonso does not yet know whether one of his most important midfielders will be available for a serious early-season test against Arsenal.
The issue is straightforward. Caicedo made his return against Brighton, lasted 14 minutes, then came off after feeling pain again. Chelsea still won 4-3, but the midfielder’s setback took the shine off it. Alonso’s update was careful, which tells you enough. “Hopefully, it’s not new, and it wasn’t more than last time. He was cautious to stop, to say that his feeling was not the best. We need to assess during the week that it wasn’t something else.”
By Friday, the position had not materially changed. Alonso said “we will check tomorrow [Saturday]”, with the final training session set to decide whether Caicedo has any chance of involvement in this Premier League clash.

Moises Caicedo Doubt Leaves Midfield Questions
If Caicedo is ruled out, Chelsea need a practical solution, not a clever one. Romeo Lavia is likely to start after scoring against Brighton, and Reece James may again be used in midfield, an area where Chelsea clearly see a bigger role for him this season. That matters even more after Enzo Fernandez’s move to Manchester City and the failed transfer for Lamine Camara.
Valentin Barco is another possibility, though experience may push Alonso towards Lavia and James from the outset. It is not complicated. Arsenal away is not the fixture for experiments that do not need to happen.
Chelsea Injury Update on Henderson and Palestra
Jordan Henderson is still waiting to make his Chelsea debut. The wrist injury suffered at the World Cup continues to delay him, and Alonso has said he is waiting for the “green light” before using the 36-year-old. Marco Palestra also remains sidelined, leaving Chelsea a little short on depth in areas where they would prefer more flexibility.
Predicted Chelsea XI for Arsenal Clash
Elsewhere, the shape looks fairly settled. Emi Martinez is expected to continue in goal. Wesley Fofana, Maxence Lacroix and Levi Colwill should make up the back three. Pedro Neto and Jorrel Hato appear the leading wing-back options, though Pep Chavarria remains an alternative on the left.
Further forward, Morgan Rogers, Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro are likely to continue as Chelsea’s attacking unit. It is new, mobile and has enough quality to trouble Arsenal if the midfield gives them a platform.
Chelsea probable XI: Martinez, Fofana, Lacroix, Colwill, Neto, Lavia, James, Hato, Rogers, Palmer, Joao Pedro.
Kick-off is at 4:30pm BST on Sunday, September 6 at Emirates Stadium. For Chelsea, the headline is simple. The Caicedo fitness test could shape everything.
