Arsenal Injury Update Before Napoli as Timber, Saliba and Bruno Guimaraes Near Key Calls

Arsenal beat Chelsea 2-1, came from behind, kept momentum and moved on quickly. That is the easy part. The harder part for Mikel Arteta is managing a squad that already has enough fitness concerns to shape team selection for the opening Champions League tie against Napoli.

The immediate mood is positive. Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard delivered the goals at the Emirates, Declan Rice got through the full 90 minutes after concern over a knock, and the title holders still look sharp. Yet the injury picture remains uneven, particularly in defence, where William Saliba is still out and Cristhian Mosquera has become the latest player under scrutiny.

There is also the issue of Bruno Guimaraes, Arsenal’s £75 million summer signing, whose start in north London has lacked rhythm. He was on the bench against Chelsea and unused, which tells you two things. First, the problem is not severe. Second, Arteta saw no reason to gamble.

Timber closing in on return

Jurrien Timber has not played yet this season after minor summer surgery, but his comeback is plainly getting closer. Arteta offered a positive update, saying: “He’s in really good condition at the moment. He’s been on the pitch for a few weeks and he’s been training with us now, so he’s in a good place.”

That matters because Arsenal need depth, versatility and control in the back line. Timber can give all three. He was not in the matchday squad against Chelsea, which suggests the club are still being careful, though the expectation now is that his return is imminent. Napoli away may come just at the right time if Arsenal want to reintroduce him without overloading minutes too early.

Saliba absence still defines Arsenal defence

The biggest injury concern remains Saliba. Arsenal have coped well enough so far, but there is no point pretending his absence is minor. He is one of the side’s most important players and back injuries are rarely straightforward, even when surgery is avoided.

The official position from the summer was clear: “Specialist reviews on William’s return to London this week have confirmed that he has suffered a back injury which will require a period of rehabilitation.

“Extensive assessments have concluded that surgery is not recommended, but William should now commence a managed recovery programme.

“William’s rehabilitation will commence immediately, with continual management of his injury, and he is expected to be out of action for an extended period.”

He has still been included in the Champions League squad, which keeps options open later in the campaign, though the realistic timeframe remains winter 2026. Until then, Arsenal must patch things together smartly.

Ezri Konsa made his full debut against Chelsea after Mosquera missed out, and there is every chance he keeps his place next to Gabriel in Naples. That pairing looks likely by necessity more than design.

Bruno Guimaraes and Mosquera need caution

Bruno Guimaraes has had a broken introduction since arriving for £75 million. He played 45 minutes against Manchester City in the Community Shield, later appeared with ice on his right thigh, then missed the win over Coventry. He also picked up another knock after his substitute appearance against Aston Villa.

Even so, being fit enough for the bench against Chelsea strongly suggests he is close. Arsenal will want his control and authority in European midfield battles, and Napoli away has that sort of game written all over it. He should be in contention to start, provided there has been no setback in the final sessions.

Mosquera is less certain. He went off in the second half against Aston Villa and Arteta’s update was cautious rather than alarmed: “He had a muscular issue,” Arteta said. “We think it is not too much but we need to wait and see in the next few days how it evolves.”

That usually means doubt rather than certainty. Arsenal are unlikely to force the issue with a muscle problem this early in the season, especially with bigger fixtures ahead.

Napoli test comes with decisions to make

So this is where Arsenal stand. Rice appears fine. Timber is close. Bruno Guimaraes is pushing for involvement. Mosquera remains a doubt. Saliba is still a long-term absentee. None of it is ideal, though none of it changes the broader picture either.

Arsenal have started well, they have already shown resilience, and Arteta has enough depth to get through the immediate schedule. The challenge now is simple, avoid turning manageable issues into longer problems. Napoli away is important, but it is September. Arsenal would be wise to remember that.
