Manchester United are back in the Champions League, three years after they last played in it. That matters at Old Trafford, where qualifying is the minimum and competing properly is the expectation. Thursday’s meeting with Sabah FK is the first step, and Michael Carrick’s team go into it with enough certainty in selection, even if a few injury concerns remain.
Carrick earned this stage by guiding United to a third-placed Premier League finish last season. That bought him the job full-time and, more importantly, bought him credibility. Now comes the harder part, dealing with European football, squad depth and the usual noise around availability.

The headline is simple. Mason Mount is close and may be involved after being seen back in training. Matthijs de Ligt is further behind, still recovering from a long-term back issue, though he is moving towards full fitness. Luke Shaw is the main doubt after being carefully managed following the 2-2 draw at Everton.
Shaw set up Benjamin Sesko in that match, and Sesko himself is pushing to start. Carrick said the striker was almost back to full fitness after a shin problem disrupted the end of last season. That gives United another decision in attack.
There are clearer absentees elsewhere. Amad Diallo is expected to miss out until October with an ankle injury. Carlos Baleba, newly signed from Brighton, is also sidelined. Manuel Ugarte and Tom Heaton remain unavailable too.
Predicted XI and key selection issues
The likely shape is 4-2-3-1. Senne Lammens should start in goal. At full-back, there is a straightforward question, who plays on the right and who covers the left if Shaw does not make it. Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui are the obvious options, and either could switch flank depending on balance. Harry Amass is an outside possibility, but this feels early for that call.
In central defence, Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez look the most probable pairing. De Ligt may not be ready to start, while Ayden Heaven and Leny Yoro offer alternatives if Carrick wants to rotate or manage minutes.
Midfield is where injuries have narrowed the choices. With Baleba and Ugarte absent, Kobbie Mainoo and Youri Tielemans are the logical double pivot. Andrey Santos, the £48m signing from Chelsea, is pushing for inclusion, but recent selections point towards Mainoo and Tielemans keeping their places.
Bruno Fernandes, Sesko and Rashford decision
Bruno Fernandes should operate centrally behind the striker, with Bryan Mbeumo likely on the right. The main call is whether Sesko starts. If he does, Marcus Rashford may be given a breather, allowing Matheus Cunha to move wide from a central role.
