Three Chelsea stars set to return from injury ahead of Hull City clash

Chelsea Injury News After Leeds Win: Levi Colwill, Moises Caicedo and Key Return Dates

Chelsea got through against Leeds United in the Carabao Cup, winning 6-3 at Stamford Bridge, but the scoreline did not clean up the bigger issue. The real story for Xabi Alonso is availability. Selection is already being shaped by fitness, and after a chaotic cup tie the list of concerns has not gone away.

This was one of those nights where squad players had an opening and failed to take it. Chelsea went 2-0 down, the game got messy, and only when the heavier artillery came on did the balance shift. That matters, because rotation only works when the second line gives you something reliable. Right now, injuries and half-fit players are forcing decisions.

Here is where things stand on Levi Colwill, Moises Caicedo, Marco Palestra and Jordan Henderson ahead of Chelsea’s next run of fixtures.

Levi Colwill concern after early exit

Colwill was the fresh talking point from the Leeds match. He had already been left out against Arsenal as a precaution after picking up an issue in training, and there was enough concern around him given his previous ACL absence. So when he started against Leeds and then came off for Wesley Fofana before heading straight down the tunnel, alarm bells were obvious.

Alonso tried to calm the situation afterwards. He said: “It is just from little things that he’s having, but we don’t expect that it’s an injury.”

That sounds reassuring, up to a point. Managers tend to leave themselves room when they talk immediately after games, and that quote does exactly that. Chelsea will hope it is no more than load management and discomfort rather than anything structural. At this stage, the expectation is that Colwill could still be available for the home game against Hull City on September 12.

Moises Caicedo fitness still unresolved

Caicedo’s start to the season has been broken up by a calf problem, and Chelsea have already learned the cost of bringing him back too quickly. He missed the opening two matches, returned against Brighton, then lasted only 14 minutes before going off again. He was absent against Arsenal and Leeds, and Alonso made clear it is the same issue rather than a fresh one.

“He has a problem in his calf,” the manager said of Caicedo.

He then added: “No [it is not a new injury]. It was the same one he had before Brighton. I wanted to have Moi [for that game].”

And the key line was this: “Probably it was my mistake to push him too early, so that’s why I’m cautious now not to make the same mistake.”

That is as close as you get to a public admission that the medical and coaching call did not work. The sensible move now is patience. Chelsea need Caicedo fit properly, not patched together for one match and lost for two more. Hull City on September 12 remains the likely target.

Marco Palestra closing in on debut

Marco Palestra has barely registered competitively since arriving from Atalanta, despite being a regular feature in pre-season. The reason is simple, a training knock stalled his integration before the campaign got going.

There is, however, some encouragement. The Italian recently said: “I’m fine, it’s still a few days away, but I feel much better.”

For Chelsea, that points to a player nearing availability rather than one facing a long lay-off. If there are no setbacks, Palestra could finally be involved against Hull City. Given the lack of impact from some fringe options against Leeds, Alonso could do with another fit body who can actually compete for minutes.

Jordan Henderson nearing Chelsea return

Henderson has yet to make his Chelsea debut after joining on a free transfer from Brentford. The problem was unusual rather than muscular, a broken wrist suffered while celebrating England’s World Cup quarter-final win over Mexico. It has kept him from full involvement longer than expected, but he is now back around the group.

Alonso gave a detailed update, saying: “He has been very close to the team.” He continued: “Even being injured, he has been travelling with us [to games]. I know that he likes and he needs to have this connection with the team, to have this impact on the pitch and off the pitch.

“He has been training very well, but still it is frustrating for him that, even being the arm, it is taking that long. I think he is in the last stage of his recovery.”

That points to a return away at Brentford on September 18. Chelsea will want his experience, particularly while the squad still looks uneven and short of rhythm. The bottom line is straightforward. Chelsea won the cup tie, but the injury picture remains the more important result.
