Arsenal Team News: Bruno Guimaraes in Line for Sunderland Start

Arsenal may finally hand Bruno Guimaraes his first Premier League start when they travel to Sunderland on Saturday night. Mikel Arteta has taken his time with the £75million summer signing, largely because of minor injury issues, but the signs now point towards a proper introduction.

Guimaraes came off the bench against Napoli in midweek and looks ready for a bigger role. The expectation is that he could start next to Declan Rice, which would give Arsenal more control in midfield and a bit more steel in a game that could get noisy quickly. His Newcastle past guarantees a hostile reception at the Stadium of Light, but managers do not pick teams based on crowd sentiment.

Mosquera appears less likely to feature, but he is not far away. Arteta said: “He’s been doing really well,” before adding, “Let’s see if he can get this game or the next one. It will be around that time, I think.”

One absentee is certain. William Saliba remains out for an extended period after aggravating a back problem while on France duty earlier this summer. He avoided surgery, which matters, but Arsenal still have to manage without one of their most important defenders.
