Manchester United appear to be moving into a strong position in the market for Pierre Kalulu, with fresh reporting from TeamTalk indicating that Old Trafford is currently the most likely Premier League destination if Juventus are forced to consider a sale.

The broad picture is clear. United want to reshape their back line and the scale of that work could be significant. The original report states that bolstering defence will be the priority and that the wider project, involving as many as four defensive additions, “could cost £500million in total”. That is a huge number, but it also underlines how central this department has become to planning.

What stands out most is the versatility. A defender who is a “natural centre-back” but can also operate at right-back would give United options across a long season. Supporters have seen enough injury disruption and enough tactical reshuffling to know how valuable that can be. If the recruitment team truly has made “detailed assessments”, then that suggests proper planning rather than a rushed move.

The fee is substantial, of course. Paying €45-50m, around £39-43m, is never a small call, especially if the club really is looking at multiple defensive signings. Yet there is also an argument that paying for the right profile now is better than patching holes again in 12 months.

There will naturally be concern about Juventus wanting to keep him and even considering a new deal. That can make negotiations difficult very quickly.
