As a Newcastle supporter, this report feels believable because the need is easy to understand. Catamo sounds like the sort of winger who could add pace, unpredictability and genuine output in the final third, and those are qualities every ambitious side wants more of. If he is producing “two goals and three assists from his opening seven games of the campaign” in Portugal, then naturally clubs here are going to take notice.

The concern, of course, is the price. £51m is major money for a player who is still proving himself at the top end, and Newcastle cannot afford too many luxury swings in the market. Recruitment has to be precise. That said, if multiple Premier League sides are scouting him and if he is “more than open to the possibility of moving to the Premier League”, then Newcastle should absolutely be doing their homework.

From a fan point of view, there is also satisfaction in seeing the club linked with dynamic attacking players rather than stopgaps. Newcastle need depth and quality out wide if they are to push on under Matthias Jaissle.
