There is still a note of caution, though. €80 million, or potentially closer to €90 million, is a huge outlay for a player who has openly said he wants to remain at Athletic. Chelsea have been here before with high-profile pursuits where admiration was genuine but the conditions never quite made sense. Long contracts and release clauses tend to leave very little room for compromise.
