Manchester City Beat Sunderland in Eight Goal Premier League Thriller

Manchester City moved three points clear at the top of the Premier League after surviving a remarkable Sunderland challenge at the Etihad, winning 5-3 in an afternoon of relentless attacking football.

Enzo Maresca’s side maintained their 100 per cent league record, although Sunderland repeatedly exposed weaknesses in a City defence that had conceded only twice in the competition before this meeting.

Enzo Fernandez opened the scoring after nine minutes, registering his first Manchester City goal since his £125 million move from Chelsea. His cleverly struck free kick caught Sunderland at the near post and gave City the advantage from their first attack.

Semenyo strikes before Brobbey completes hat trick

The second half initially brought greater control before Manchester City struck again.

Marc Guehi attempted to find Haaland with a pass, only for the ball to reach Semenyo. The forward reacted decisively, drilling a left footed finish into the far corner for his second goal of the afternoon.

Sunderland required only two minutes to respond.

Granit Xhaka’s intelligent pass released Nilson Angulo, who delivered the ball across goal for Brobbey to force home. It completed the Netherlands striker’s first senior hat trick and reduced Manchester City’s advantage to 4-3.

City attempted to control possession and remove some of Sunderland’s momentum. The visitors continued pushing forward and almost drew level following uncertainty from Donnarumma.

The Italian goalkeeper failed to claim a high delivery, Ruben Dias then produced a loose touch which sent the ball back towards his own goal. The City captain recovered quickly enough to hook it off the line.

Donnarumma appeared uncomfortable again when Sunderland launched the resulting long throw into his penalty area. Manchester City survived.

Haaland finally settles extraordinary contest

Manchester City eventually found the decisive fifth goal nine minutes from time.

Josko Gvardiol advanced before delivering across goal, where Haaland slid in at the back post to convert. The assistant initially raised the flag for offside, as had happened with Haaland’s goal at Old Trafford the previous weekend.

Gvardiol had timed his movement correctly, however, and the decision was overturned.

Haaland has now scored against every Premier League opponent he has faced, while Manchester City head into the international break with five victories from five league matches.

Their wider start has also included victories in Europe and the Carabao Cup, with City scoring 13 league goals during the opening phase of the campaign.

There remains considerable work for Maresca. Sunderland accumulated 4.25 expected goals at the Etihad and repeatedly found routes through a defence that had previously appeared secure.

City’s attacking quality proved decisive. Fernandez’s inventive free kick, Semenyo’s two finishes and Haaland’s late intervention provided enough firepower to protect their perfect record.

Sunderland performance offers encouragement

Sunderland leave Manchester without a point after another performance that demonstrated their ability to trouble leading Premier League opposition.

Their week had already included victory on their return to European competition on Wednesday, alongside league fixtures against the division’s top two.

Regis Le Bris will inevitably be frustrated by how several Manchester City goals arrived. Sunderland were punished when attempting to play out, struggled with the cross preceding Semenyo’s first goal and allowed City enough opportunities for their attacking talent to decide the contest.

Their own ambition remained visible throughout.

Angulo had an opportunity to give Sunderland an early lead before Fernandez struck. Brobbey then produced three goals, with Le Fee instrumental in creating the openings that repeatedly unsettled Manchester City.

Even at 5-3, Sunderland continued attacking. Dan Ballard and Malick Fofana both had clear chances that could have created an anxious conclusion for the league leaders.

For Manchester City, five league victories from five represents an impressive beginning to the post Guardiola era under Maresca. Their attacking players continue to deliver and, when Sunderland threatened to overturn the afternoon, City found another route towards victory.

For Sunderland, the final score brings frustration after a performance containing considerable attacking promise. Their refusal to retreat, even after repeated setbacks, ensured Manchester City were pushed deep into an extraordinary eight goal contest.
