There is also the England angle. Missing out on Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad raised questions around his standing, even if his subsequent recall underlined that his quality remains respected. For interested clubs, that blend of pedigree and possible availability will always command attention.

For now, the decisive factor is the player’s own outlook and Madrid’s lack of intention to sanction a mid-season departure. From an intrigued Arsenal supporter’s perspective, this is exactly the kind of report that grabs attention, even if it comes with a heavy dose of caution. Trent Alexander-Arnold is a huge name, a player with elite-level experience, creative quality and the sort of passing range that could add something different to any side.

The obvious attraction is that Arsenal are always looking for marginal gains, and bringing in a right-back of that profile would count as a major one. If there is any uncertainty over his standing at Real Madrid, of course Arsenal should be aware of it. That is what well-run clubs do.

At the same time, this does not read like a move that is close. It sounds more like groundwork, information gathering and seeing whether a future opening could appear. Supporters should probably resist getting carried away by the glamour of the name alone.

There would also be tactical questions. Alexander-Arnold offers immense quality on the ball, but Arsenal would need to be certain the overall balance works, especially in the biggest games. Still, if the chance ever became genuine, it would be hard not to be excited. Players of this calibre do not come onto the market often, and Arsenal being in that conversation says plenty about where the club now stands.
