“He is an option, he trained well at the end of the week but he was out of training at the start, we didn’t want to take any risk because there was high speed running to do and defending against Lamine Yamal.

“I did not want to risk it. He is always in our discussions in the left-back position, he plays left-back at his club, Nico plays in centre midfield.

“Lewis’ situation is he will fight for his place and get his first matches, there are still a few matches to go.”

That tells you everything. This was not a tactical snub, it was a fitness decision. Tuchel looked at the demands of facing Lamine Yamal and decided Hall was not ready for that level of exposure after missing sessions. Reasonable enough.

Instead, Nico O’Reilly started and lasted the full match. He did provide the assist for Harry Kane as England moved 2-1 ahead, but there were clear problems. He was caught out for Alex Baena’s equaliser and found it hard work against Yamal. That matters because Hall had earned praise last season for handling the same winger far more effectively in club football.

Hall’s recent contract extension at Newcastle underlines where his career is heading. He is progressing quickly, and Tuchel’s comments made clear he remains part of the conversation at left-back. The manager did not dodge the issue, he simply judged the risk too high on the night.

England now move on to Czechia in Prague, with further Nations League fixtures against Croatia and Czechia still to come. For Hall, the message is simple. He has not lost his place because he never truly had the chance to claim it here. Once fully fit, that chance should come.
