At 22, he fits the profile Chelsea so often covet, young, upwardly mobile and potentially capable of growing in value as well as influence. The key issue now is price. A £47m agreement was there in the summer, and Monaco’s stance suggests they believe his value has risen. If his performances continue on the same upward curve, Chelsea may find themselves paying a premium for waiting.

From a Chelsea perspective, this is exactly the kind of report that gives a bit of encouragement. Camara sounds like a player with purpose, someone who can bring balance and bite to a midfield that looked a little exposed once Enzo moved on. There is enough flair in this squad already. What Chelsea need is a player who can stitch things together, win second balls and make life easier for the more creative talents around him.

The age profile works too. At 22, he fits the club’s long-term planning, but he is not so raw that you would fear he needs three years before making an impact. If the scouting has been as intensive as suggested, then Chelsea should trust that judgement and move decisively.

The worry, of course, is the fee. If Monaco held firm at £47m before, January could become even more expensive. Chelsea cannot keep arriving at the right target and then stumbling at the final step. That has happened too often in recent years.

Still, if this deal is there to be done, it feels worth pushing for. Camara looks like the sort of midfielder every strong side needs, not always the headline-maker, but often the player who gives everyone else the platform to shine. Chelsea fans would welcome that kind of substance.
