England Injury Doubts Leave Tuchel Waiting Ahead of Czech Republic Clash

England head into Tuesday’s Nations League fixture against the Czech Republic with two defensive concerns still unresolved. Thomas Tuchel has admitted he is still waiting on late fitness calls for Ezri Konsa and Nico O’Reilly, with both players missing the main group session before the squad travelled to Prague.

After the 3-2 defeat to Spain at Wembley, England need a response. It is not panic stations after one game in a six-match league phase, but there is already pressure around the squad. Lose again and the table starts to matter very quickly.

Tuchel waits on Konsa and O’Reilly

Konsa and O’Reilly were the only two members of the 24-man group absent from full training on Monday. Both followed individual programmes instead, which tells you enough. Tuchel was direct about it. “I’m not sure yet. They missed training today, that’s what you saw.

“It was because of minor issues. But there are still issues.”

Tuchel explained that the final call will come after medical assessments on Tuesday morning. “Today in the morning we had a light training for the guys who started the game.

“The very last checks will be made tomorrow morning. If the doctors and physios give thumbs up then we’re good to go.

“One day longer would really make a difference. I feel the players who were on the pitch today all really want to play and are up for it.”

That last line matters. Availability is one issue, readiness is another. England need defenders fit enough to play, and sharp enough to deal with a game that now carries obvious weight.

Nations League reaction now matters

Tuchel refused to label the Czech Republic match a defining one. “It is a bit early for ‘must-win’,” he said. “It is a bit early in the group for ‘must-win’.

“We respect the quality of the opposition. I feel I always need a result, no matter where. Especially after defeat, even if this is the way to go forward, even then you just need it for yourself, and to show straight away a reaction. The match tomorrow has the highest priority.”

That is the correct reading of it. England do not need drama, they need a cleaner performance, fewer defensive questions and a result.
