What actually works this year and what you need to stop doing
EA SPORTS FC 27 landed on September 25, and if you’re still playing it like FC 26 you’ve probably already felt it. The biggest shift is defending. AI defenders no longer win the ball for you, so your results now depend on your hands more than ever. Passing, crossing and corners got reworked as well, PlayStyles were rebalanced, and Ultimate Team has a brand new economy. The official gameplay deep dive from EA is worth a read if you want the full list.
I put together ten tips for anyone stuck in the lower divisions or trying to squeeze a few more wins out of Champions. Some of this is mechanical, some of it is mental and some of it is stuff you already know but aren’t actually doing. And if you’d rather save your evenings, providers like KingBoost offer FC 27 boosting for people short on time. The tips below will help whichever route you take. Let’s get into it.
- Figure Out Your Gameplay Preset
This one sounds basic, but you’d be amazed how many people don’t know FC has two separate gameplay presets. Competitive is the faster, snappier version built around online responsiveness and player control. It’s what you want for Ultimate Team and Clubs, and it’s the preset where EA made its biggest FC 27 defending changes.
Authentic is the slower, more tactical version where defenders hold their positions like real footballers. It’s great for Career Mode and terrible for online play unless you enjoy getting outpaced by everyone.
If your matches feel sluggish and weird, check your settings. It takes ten seconds.
- Take Control of Your Defending
Last year the advice was simple: leave your centre backs alone and let the AI hold the line. In FC 27 that advice will get you burned. AI defenders no longer jump in with automatic tackles when a dribbler gets close. They hold their position and support the play, and they only win the ball from loose balls or direct collisions. Your teammates also mark the ball carrier from further away, which means pressure only happens when you make it happen.
So defending is now a manual job. Switch to the right defender early, jockey with L2/LT to stay goal-side, and pick your moment for the stand tackle. EA increased the jockey speed of manually controlled defenders and the reach of manual stand tackles, so the tools are there. Don’t just sprint at the ball carrier and hope. That’s how you open gaps for the through ball.
I believe this is the number one thing that separates decent players from players who concede three or four goals every match. If defending still feels like your weak spot after practicing, KingBoost offers FC 27 coaching where a pro watches your gameplay and tells you what you’re doing wrong. Sometimes you just need someone to point out the habits you can’t see yourself.
- Stop Spamming Skill Moves
Dribbling got a little more interesting in FC 27. Agile players with strong Balance, Agility and Dribbling attributes can now stay in control when they’re knocked off balance, which makes the left stick feel better than ever on current-gen platforms.
But here’s where people mess up. They learn that dribbling feels good and decide the answer is MORE skill moves. Spamming tricks slows your attack down and makes you predictable. The player on the other side can see the rainbow flick coming from a mile away.
Pick two or three moves and stick with them. My picks are ball roll into shot, which works inside the box almost every time, and La Croqueta for squeezing past someone in a tight spot. Add a simple fake shot and you’re done. Master those and you’ll create more chances than the guy cycling through the entire skill move catalogue every possession.
- PlayStyles Matter, But Attributes Matter More Now
PlayStyles and PlayStyles+ are still a big part of how a player performs. Two strikers can have almost identical shooting stats on paper and one will curl the ball into the top corner while the other sends it into Row Z.
The difference this year is that EA deliberately pulled PlayStyles back toward the attributes. Finesse Shot now scales with the shooter’s stats. Rapid and Quick Step give a smaller speed boost, so Acceleration matters again. Pinged Pass and Tiki Taka lost their bonus to the receiver’s first touch, and Low Driven no longer adds extra shot speed. In short, a well-rounded player with strong core stats is now a safer bet than a specialist with one elite PlayStyle and mediocre numbers everywhere else.
When you build your squad, look at both. Don’t sort by overall rating and call it a day, but don’t chase flashy icons on a card with weak base stats either.
- Your Squad Is Probably Unbalanced
Everyone wants that one incredible striker. I get it. But if you blow 500k coins on a monster attacker and then run budget centre backs and a midfielder you got from a free pack in the first week, you’re going to lose more than you win.
Defensive stability wins games, and with manual defending now the main source of tackles, it matters even more. A solid CDM and a reliable centre back pairing will do more for your win rate than any individual attacker. Get your spine right first, then worry about the fun positions.
Also check how your players fit their roles. According to EA, special Items released through the year get Role++ familiarity across every role in their primary and secondary positions, so it’s worth spending fifteen minutes in squad management instead of auto-filling everything.
And if you’re short on time to earn the funds for all this, some players pick up FC 27 coins rather than grinding every evening. No judgment. Some of us have jobs.
- Stick With One Formation
I’m guilty of this too. I’ve lost three games, panicked, gone on YouTube, found a video titled “BROKEN FORMATION GUARANTEED WINS” and copied the tactics code. Then I lost three more games because I had no idea how the new setup actually worked.
So don’t be like me. Pick one formation and commit to it for at least 20 or 30 games. Learn where the passing lanes are. Figure out which runs your players make on their own and which ones you need to trigger. Understand what happens when you’re defending a lead versus chasing one.
That said, some shapes are looking strong early on. The 4-4-1-1 is the most used formation among both community squads and pros, the 4-2-1-3 and the flat 4-4-2 are close behind, and the 4-2-3-1 Wide gives you a slightly calmer version of the same balance. Two deeper midfielders protecting the back four is the common thread, which makes sense in a game where you have to defend by hand.
But honestly, the “best” formation is whichever one you understand inside out and feel comfortable with.
- Use the New Stuff in Ultimate Team
A lot of people ignore what’s new in FC 27 Ultimate Team, and that’s a mistake. The first big change is the economy. Rivals and Champions matches now pay out several times more coins than the roughly 500 to 600 per game of FC 26, and every Rivals pack reward is tradeable at launch. You can build a stronger club just by playing.
The second is the road to Champions. You collect Champions Qualification Points through Division Rivals and Squad Battles, and the old Division 6 entry requirement is gone. If you’ve avoided Champions because the qualification felt like a wall, now’s a good time to try.
Then there’s the FUT Gallery, where Player Items you collect go into themed sets, earn Gallery Tokens and push your Gallery Level up even after the item is gone. There are also new Single Player Live Events against themed AI opponents, a nice break when you don’t feel like facing humans. You can read the full list in EA’s Ultimate Team deep dive.
- Learn the New Passing and Movement
This is where FC 27 asks the most of your hands. Ground and lobbed through passes no longer steer toward open lanes, they follow your stick direction exactly. Dinked passes are fully manual too, so aim and power decide everything. It raises the skill ceiling, and it also means defenders have a fair chance to intercept sloppy balls.
Crossing works the same way. Crosses go into space rather than onto a specific player, so a lazy cross can miss everyone. Headers are rarer but more accurate when they connect.
On the movement side, you can now trigger curved runs by tapping L1 + R1 (LB + RB on Xbox), or use Pass & Follow with L1 + R1 + X (LB + RB + A). They take longer because of the curve, but they let a runner bend around a defender and get in behind. Manually triggered runs stop after a limited distance, so re-trigger them when you need more.
Corners also have a new pre-delivery window that lets you move your attackers, make runs or use the new Avoidance mechanic (hold R1/RB) before the ball is even kicked. Spend an hour in practice mode with these. Patient build-up play, quick triangles and well-timed runs are the way to go.
- Don’t Sleep on Clubs
Clubs are not a separate menu item anymore. It lives inside the new Grounds mode, accessed through the Clubhouse, and the change comes with some real upgrades. All Archetypes are unlocked by default, resets no longer cost coins, and you can adjust individual attributes instead of rebuilding from scratch. Masteries carry permanent bonuses across all your builds, and the new Amps system adds PlayStyles and Perks at the higher tiers.
One warning: The Grounds, including Clubs, is only on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. If you’re still on last-gen hardware, Clubs is gone.
If your usual squad isn’t online, don’t be afraid to team up with people through the Grounds. A friendly group that communicates will beat a random lobby of strangers any day.
- Stop Playing Tilted
You know this. I know this. We all know this and we all do it anyway.
You concede a stupid goal. You get angry. You sprint forward immediately trying to equalize. Your defense is wide open. You concede again. Now you’re furious. You start forcing passes, attempting skill moves in your own half and generally playing like someone who has never seen a football before.
The players who climb consistently aren’t necessarily more skilled than you. They’re just calmer. After conceding they slow down, keep the ball for a few passes and wait for the right moment. They don’t chase the equalizer like their house is on fire.
If you’re on a losing streak, close the game. Go do something else, take a breather and come back later. I promise the three extra matches you play while angry do more harm to your record than taking a break ever could.
One More Thing
FC 27 is only a few days old, and the meta is still settling. Formations that dominate in week one often look different by week four, and EA’s own guidance on defending and PlayStyles will be tested by thousands of players who find edges nobody saw coming. Stay flexible, keep experimenting and don’t get too attached to any one approach.
FC 27 rewards adaptation. If that sounds exhausting, well, at least it keeps things interesting.
