Liverpool keen on move for La Liga giant’s midfielder

Liverpool Tracking Marc Bernal as Barcelona Midfielder Emerges on 2027 Radar

Liverpool are closely monitoring Marc Bernal ahead of a possible move in 2027, with Barcelona’s highly rated young midfielder increasingly part of a wider conversation around future squad planning at Anfield. According to FICHAJES, via reporting that also references Juan Jesús and Transfer News Live, the Merseyside club hold a firm interest in the 19-year-old, whose contract at Barcelona runs until 2029.

There is no suggestion at this stage of an advanced process or formal offer, and that distinction matters. What does appear clear is that Liverpool, now led by Andoni Iraola, are assessing Bernal’s development and weighing whether a genuine opportunity could open if his role at Camp Nou remains uncertain over the next several months.

For now, Barcelona’s stance is straightforward. They want to keep the player, they have no current intention of sanctioning a sale, and any movement would almost certainly need to be driven by Bernal himself. That leaves the situation delicately poised, with game time likely to become the decisive factor.

Marc Bernal profile suits Liverpool midfield plans

Bernal is viewed internally by interested clubs as a midfielder with the right blend of tactical maturity and physical presence. He can operate as a pivot, recover possession and help build attacks from deep, attributes that align neatly with the kind of profile Liverpool would be expected to value under Iraola.

That interest is understandable. Liverpool’s midfield has undergone significant change in recent seasons, and while there is quality already in place, elite clubs continue scanning the market well in advance. Bernal appears to fit that approach, a young player with high-level coaching, strong technical grounding and scope to develop further in a demanding environment.

At Barcelona, though, the route to regular football is congested. Bernal is competing in an area of the pitch populated by Pedri, Gavi, Frenkie de Jong and Rodri, which naturally limits guarantees around starts and sustained prominence. It is that competitive landscape, more than any immediate transfer push, that may shape the story from here.

Barcelona contract creates major transfer barrier

Any prospective deal would be complicated by the protection Barcelona have already put in place. Bernal renewed his contract on 29 September 2025 through to June 2029 after recovering from the knee injury that interrupted his progress for more than a year. The Spanish club had also previously set a €500 million release clause, a familiar mechanism designed to deter opportunistic interest.

In practical terms, Liverpool would require Barcelona’s approval to take matters forward through negotiation, unless the player’s own position changed considerably. As things stand, there is no indication Barcelona are inviting bids.

Bernal’s recovery and onward development help explain why he is being watched so closely. During the 2025/26 season, he scored five goals for the first team while steadily re-establishing himself after injury. In the current 2026/27 campaign, he has made eight LaLiga appearances, played 311 minutes and provided two assists, with three starts to his name so far.

2027 decision point could define next step

The reporting points to June 2027 as a key reference point, when Bernal and those around him are expected to assess his level of involvement and whether his pathway at Barcelona remains convincing. That timing would also suit a club like Liverpool, who are known to work methodically on emerging targets rather than react late in the market.

Atletico Madrid are also credited with interest, which adds another layer to the picture. Their admiration appears genuine, although again there is no confirmation of a formal approach. For Barcelona, that creates a scenario to manage carefully. If Bernal receives limited opportunities between now and the end of the season, external attention is only likely to intensify.

For Liverpool, this is one to watch rather than one to call early. Bernal’s talent is not in doubt, his contract gives Barcelona control, and his own ambition is to convince Hansi Flick. Yet football departments plan around possibility, and if his role does not expand sufficiently by next summer, Liverpool may feel there is a conversation worth having.

Our View

From a Liverpool supporter’s perspective, this is exactly the kind of report that sparks curiosity. Bernal sounds like a very modern holding midfielder, calm in possession, intelligent out of it, and comfortable setting the rhythm from deeper areas. Those are qualities every top side wants, and they are especially useful if Iraola is shaping Liverpool into a more aggressive, structured pressing team with control behind it.

The obvious caution is availability. Barcelona do not want to sell, the contract is long, and the €500 million clause tells you how highly they regard him. That usually means one of two things, either the player becomes a major part of their future, or his route gets blocked long enough for a serious Premier League club to step in. Liverpool would need the second outcome.

There is also the wider question of timing. A move in 2027 feels realistic only if Bernal’s minutes stay patchy. If he breaks through properly, this probably goes nowhere. If he remains on the fringes, Liverpool could have a real opening because the profile makes sense. Supporters will like that part. Young, technical, tactically sharp, and with room to grow.

For now, it feels like intelligent groundwork rather than a brewing transfer battle. Still, it is one worth filing away. Liverpool have often moved decisively when long-term planning meets the right market opportunity, and Bernal may become exactly that.
