Arsenal vs Lille: Arteta Weighs Injuries, Rotation and Opportunity
Arsenal go into their Champions League meeting with Lille in decent shape on paper, but the team sheet looks far less straightforward than Mikel Arteta would have wanted. Two likely starters, Piero Hincapie and Martin Zubimendi, are out after suffering ankle injuries in training following the weekend win over Leeds.
That leaves Arteta with a familiar problem, balancing control with necessity. Arsenal opened their league phase with a 1-0 win in Naples, and a home game against Lille is one they will expect to take. Expectations, though, do not pick the back four or settle the midfield.
Arteta confirmed the immediate blow, saying: “They’re both going to miss tomorrow’s match, that’s for sure.” He added: “Today they’re going to have a further scan and probably tomorrow we’ll know more and then we’ll see how they’re going to go.”
Arsenal injuries force defensive reshuffle
Hincapie appears to be the bigger concern, having needed help off the pitch. His absence could push Myles Lewis-Skelly back into the left-back role. Riccardo Calafiori is available, but Arsenal have managed his fitness carefully and there is little sense in overloading him after his recent international involvement.
On the other side, Jurrien Timber remains a viable option at right-back if Arteta continues to split minutes with Ben White. At centre-back, Gabriel should anchor the line, with Ezri Konsa expected alongside him.

Midfield and attack offer Arsenal options
Without Zubimendi, the midfield balance changes. Declan Rice is certain to feature, while Mikel Merino looks the obvious candidate to step in. Further forward, Eberechi Eze and Viktor Gyokeres both have a chance to start, which would give Arsenal a different edge in the final third.
There is no mystery about the objective here. Arsenal need six points from six, and they need to get there without creating fresh problems.
