Brighton tracking Daniel Banjaqui as Benfica starlet attracts major European interest
Brighton have built a reputation for moving early, moving smartly and trusting their judgement in the market, so it comes as little surprise to see them linked with Benfica right-back Daniel Banjaqui. According to 4.4.2.com, the 18-year-old defender is drawing attention from across Europe after a rapid rise in Portugal.
Banjaqui has come through Benfica’s academy and has now broken into the senior picture, having already had a taste of first-team football last season. His recent displays for Portugal’s Under-21 side appear to have accelerated the interest around him and pushed his valuation into serious territory. Benfica, a club that rarely undersells its best young assets, are said to value him at around €35 million, with a release clause of €45 million written into a contract that runs until 2031.

Daniel Banjaqui profile catches Brighton attention
The attraction is easy to understand. Banjaqui is described as physically strong, dynamic and capable of handling one-against-one duels. He also brings stamina and an attacking thrust from right-back, qualities that fit the demands of elite modern football. Brighton have often targeted players with growth still to come, and Banjaqui sounds exactly the type to fit that model.
This is not a clear run, though. Tottenham are also watching in the Premier League, while Juventus, Roma, RB Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund, Atletico Madrid and Real Sociedad are all mentioned as admirers. That list alone tells its own story. When clubs from four leading leagues are circling, it usually means the talent is very real.
Benfica transfer stance remains firm
For now, there are no advanced talks and no formal negotiations. The report suggests clubs are still in the information-gathering stage, using intermediaries and opening lines of contact rather than pushing towards a deal. Benfica are in a position of strength and can afford to wait. They know what they have, and they know the price will only rise if Banjaqui continues on this path.
From Brighton’s perspective, this feels like exactly the kind of situation they monitor carefully. The challenge is obvious. Once a player reaches this level of exposure, value and competition, the margin for a clever deal becomes much smaller.
Premier League interest adds intrigue
Even so, Brighton’s presence in the conversation matters. The club’s recruitment has earned respect across the game, and when they are linked with a teenager of this calibre, it usually reflects detailed work behind the scenes. Whether they choose to go further may depend on price, timing and how strongly they believe Banjaqui can develop into a top-level Premier League full-back.
At the moment, he remains one to watch, and perhaps one to watch very closely.
Our View
As a Brighton supporter, this is the sort of report that sparks real excitement. Banjaqui sounds like a player built for the way we want to grow, young, athletic, brave in duels and able to affect games going forward. Those are the traits that have served Brighton well in recruitment, and they are usually the traits that age well in the Premier League.
The concern, naturally, is the price. €35 million is a huge commitment for an 18-year-old defender, even one with elite potential. Brighton have spent boldly before, but always with a sense of discipline. If Benfica are standing firm and Europe’s biggest clubs are gathering around, there is a point where the deal starts to drift away from smart investment and towards an auction.
That said, there is also a reason for optimism. Brighton can offer a genuine pathway. A young player joining this club knows he will be coached properly, trusted if he earns it and developed in an environment that has become one of the best in Europe for emerging talent. Under Fabian Hurzeler, that message should still carry weight.
If the interest is serious, Brighton should stay in the race for as long as the numbers make sense. Banjaqui may not end up at the Amex, but this is exactly the bracket of talent the club should be chasing. Ambitious, upwardly mobile and good enough to attract everyone else, that is where Brighton belong now.
