Chelsea Transfer News: Xabi Alonso Targets Jules Kounde and Frenkie de Jong in £101m Barcelona Move

Chelsea do not need more noise around squad planning, they need clarity. That is why this latest report, credited to Football 365, lands with some weight. Xabi Alonso is said to want a £101m January double raid on Barcelona for Jules Kounde and Frenkie de Jong, and on the surface it makes a certain amount of sense.

The positions are obvious enough. Reece James is injured again, Chelsea are light in a few key areas, and the midfield picture still looks untidy after Enzo Fernandez’s summer departure to Manchester City. Six league matches into the season, with three wins, one draw and two defeats, Chelsea are not in crisis. They are, however, in that familiar modern Chelsea space where the squad looks expensive, large and still somehow incomplete.

Xabi Alonso Faces Familiar Chelsea Squad Questions

Reports in Spain claim Alonso has asked for Kounde and de Jong, with Barcelona open to talks for both. Kounde, valued at around £46m from the figures cited, is being framed as the answer to James’ absence. De Jong, with a reported asking price closer to £55m, is the name being put forward to address the lack of control and presence left behind in midfield.

This is where Chelsea’s recruitment model gets tested. Spending more than £300m in the summer and then circling back in January for another £101m says one of two things. Either the club moved aggressively without fully solving the obvious issues, or Alonso has looked at the group and decided some of the existing options are not good enough. Neither interpretation reflects especially well on the process.

As for the alleged frustration over Enzo Fernandez leaving, that would be understandable. A coach can work with imperfections. What they struggle with is having a major hole created late in the window and then being told to improvise. De Jong may not be a like-for-like replacement, but he is an experienced, high-level midfielder who can calm a game down, retain the ball and give structure to a side that still feels a bit rushed in possession.

Jules Kounde and Frenkie de Jong Fit the Need

Kounde is the more straightforward target. He can play at right-back or centre-back, he is experienced at elite level, and he would raise the floor of Chelsea’s defence immediately. If James is going to miss a substantial period, there is little value in pretending internal solutions will magically become reliable. Chelsea need availability as much as quality.

De Jong is a more complicated case because his profile is excellent but the financial logic is less clear. He would not come cheap, and his wages would likely become part of the wider discussion even if the transfer fee is manageable. Still, Chelsea have lacked rhythm in midfield for some time. Too often they look like a team built out of talent rather than balance.

The report states: “Alonso was very upset with the Chelsea board for allowing Enzo Fernández to leave on the last day of summer and for not signing anyone to fill the huge void he left. And the solution could be the Dutchman.” If that account is accurate, then January becomes more than a shopping trip. It becomes a small test of alignment between coach and club.

Reece James Injury Adds Urgency to January Plans

Alonso was naturally measured when discussing James’ latest setback. “We are all disappointed, and especially for him. He wanted to have a good start after the international break, but in the last training session he picked up an injury. We wanted to be cautious and wait for the result of the tests.

“Now, the surgery has been successful and we will keep supporting him. He will be close to the team as he is a great influence even when he is not available. We wish him a great recovery and while we don’t set timelines, he will be out for several weeks.

“He is so proud to be playing for this club, and he is so proud to have reached this moment [in his career] because he has played many years and gone through many different stages.

“So he takes that responsibility in a very natural way, with his own way of leadership. He is so respected by his team-mates and he has the support of everyone.”

Chelsea now have a choice. They can treat January as another chance to patch over problems, or they can make two targeted moves that actually reflect what the squad needs. Kounde and de Jong would not solve everything. They would, however, look a lot more coherent than yet another scattergun rebuild.

Our View

From a hopeful Chelsea fan’s perspective, this report is easy to understand because the needs are staring everyone in the face. Reece James being injured again is a massive blow, and while there is sympathy for him, there is also realism. Chelsea cannot keep planning a season around best-case fitness scenarios. If Kounde is genuinely available, that feels like smart business. He is proven, versatile and ready to contribute straight away.

De Jong is the more exciting name. Chelsea have plenty of midfielders, but not enough who can truly dictate the game and make the team feel composed. Since Enzo Fernandez left, that absence has been obvious. There is too much chaos at times, too many transitions, too little authority in the middle of the pitch. De Jong would bring calm and technical quality, and that matters.

The main hope is that Alonso is being backed properly and early. Chelsea supporters have seen huge spending before, but what they want now is better spending. If these are the players the head coach believes can improve the side, the club should act decisively. No drama, no deadline-day panic, no collecting talent for the sake of it. Just fix the right positions and give this team a real chance to grow into something serious.
