Arsenal and Tottenham track Xavi Espart as Barcelona set demanding transfer terms

Xavi Espart has attracted attention from both sides of north London, but Barcelona have already put substantial protection around his future. Arsenal and Tottenham are reportedly scouting the 19-year-old defender, whose new contract includes a release clause exceeding €100 million.

The interest reflects the appeal of a young full-back comfortable in possession and capable of operating in several positions. The difficulty for any prospective buyer lies in persuading Barcelona to discuss a departure so soon after securing his long-term commitment.

According to CaughtOffside, both Premier League clubs have watched Espart in person and prepared detailed reports. Their interest has not progressed to formal negotiations, leaving this as a developing scouting story rather than an imminent transfer.

Xavi Espart attracts north London scouting attention

CaughtOffside’s report, citing sources close to the agents industry, places Arsenal and Tottenham among several clubs following Espart’s progress.

Aston Villa, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus are also monitoring the La Masia graduate. That range of reported interest suggests his performances are drawing attention beyond Spain, although it does not establish that any club is preparing an offer.

Espart’s technical quality, positional understanding and versatility are the attributes highlighted in the report. For clubs assessing young defenders, that combination offers potential value across different roles and systems.

The challenge is judging how those qualities will develop with greater experience. At 19, Espart is being assessed both for what he can contribute now and for the player he might become.

Watching him live and compiling reports are part of that process. They give interested clubs a basis for future decisions without committing them to a pursuit.

Barcelona contract creates significant transfer obstacle

Barcelona awarded Espart a professional contract running until June 2030 on July 1, 2026. The agreement includes a release clause worth more than €100 million.

That clause should be distinguished from a negotiated asking price. It does not establish that a buying club would necessarily have to pay the full amount, but it reinforces Barcelona’s control over any potential departure.

CaughtOffside places Espart’s current market value at around €25 million. It also reports that Barcelona would require an offer in the region of €40 million to €50 million, plus bonuses, before considering discussions.

Those figures describe different things: an estimated valuation, a reported threshold for talks and a contractual release clause. None amounts to an agreed transfer fee.

With several years remaining on the deal, Barcelona face no immediate contractual pressure to sell. Arsenal, Tottenham or another interested club would therefore need to make a compelling proposal simply to open a conversation.

Hansi Flick comparison highlights Espart’s qualities

Hansi Flick has offered a striking assessment of the teenager, drawing a comparison with Philipp Lahm.

“When I watch Xavi Espart play, I like his confidence on the ball. He reminds me of Philipp Lahm,” Flick said, in comments reported by Football España.

The emphasis on confidence in possession helps explain the attention around Espart. It also provides a more specific insight than the broader excitement that often accompanies an emerging academy player.

For Arsenal, his reported ability to operate in different positions could appeal to Mikel Arteta’s preference for defenders comfortable moving into midfield.

Tottenham could regard him as a longer-term option, particularly amid reported interest in Pedro Porro from Barcelona and Real Madrid. However, no agreement involving Porro or connection between the two players’ futures has been established.

January move remains distant prospect

For now, the clearest distinction is between interest and action. Arsenal and Tottenham are watching Espart, while Barcelona have a lengthy contract and demanding reported financial expectations.

A January transfer would require substantial progress from that starting point. There is currently no reported formal negotiation to suggest such a move is gathering pace.

Espart’s continued development will determine whether the scouting attention becomes something more concrete. Further evidence of his quality could strengthen interest, but it could also reinforce Barcelona’s desire to keep him.

The immediate story is therefore one of competing assessments: interested clubs see a promising defender worth following, while Barcelona’s contract arrangements underline how firmly they intend to control his future.
