Chelsea vs Tottenham Preview: Team News, Predictions and Key Battles at Stamford Bridge

This is still a big London fixture, even if neither side is carrying any European distraction into it. Chelsea and Tottenham were both in the Champions League last season. Now they are dealing with the consequences of bad 2025/26 league campaigns and trying to repair the damage in the Premier League.

Chelsea look further along. Xabi Alonso has brought clarity, energy and results. A 2-0 win away at Everton made them the first side to beat David Moyes’ team this season, and it pushed Chelsea into fourth by the end of last weekend. That matters. So does the way they are playing. There is more control, more threat and more confidence.

Tottenham are still in the messy stage. Back-to-back 17th-place finishes told their own story, and the heavy spending in the summer was meant to drag them out of that cycle. Instead, they went into Monday night’s game against Coventry City rooted to the bottom. A 3-1 win finally arrived, and it moved Roberto De Zerbi’s side up to 16th. Relief, yes. Proof of a revival, not yet.

Chelsea team news and likely changes

Chelsea have a problem in goal. Emi Martínez is out after jaw surgery following the collision at Everton, so Mike Penders, still only 21, is set to start. It is a proper test for a young keeper, particularly in a derby.

Reece James is out until around January after knee surgery. Jamie Gittens remains sidelined with the ankle issue he suffered on England Under-21 duty. Pep Chavarria is a doubt because of a minor training injury, which opens the door for Jorrel Hato at left-back.

There is better news elsewhere. Malo Gusto missed the Everton match because of illness and is expected back in the squad. Emmanuel Emegha, however, is unlikely to be involved after suffering a setback. Chelsea still have enough attacking quality, and that is why they will fancy this game.

Tottenham injuries leave familiar concerns

Tottenham’s injury list remains a nuisance, and that is putting it politely. Andy Robertson picked up a knock on Monday and is now a doubt, with Ben Davies a possible replacement. Omar Marmoush and Tosin Adarabioyo also came off against Coventry with calf issues, though De Zerbi has attempted to calm the noise around all three.

Lucas Bergvall is out with a knee injury, Savio has a muscle problem, and long-term absentees Xavi Simons and Wilson Odobert remain unavailable. Rodrigo Bentancur is still suspended. Mykhailo Mudryk cannot face his parent club during his loan spell and is also struggling with an ankle injury.

There are at least a few possible returns. Pedro Porro is back in training after a hamstring injury and should make the squad. Destiny Udogie could also return after missing the Coventry game with a knee problem. Dejan Kulusevski made his comeback against Coventry after 526 days out, and he may get more minutes here.

Key players who could decide Stamford Bridge clash

Two names jump out in Chelsea’s attack. Morgan Rogers has six goal involvements in six games against Spurs, four goals and two assists. Cole Palmer has four in five league games against Tottenham, two goals and two assists. More importantly, both are in strong form this season, with eight goals and seven assists between them.

That is where this game could tilt decisively. Tottenham still give up chances, and they still have moments where the back line looks open and the midfield fails to protect it. Chelsea have the players to exploit that quickly.

Kick-off is at 5.30pm BST on Saturday, October 24 at Stamford Bridge. On current evidence, Chelsea should win. Tottenham may make it awkward for spells, and Monday’s result against Coventry will have helped the mood, but this is a tougher examination. Chelsea are more settled, more dangerous and, right now, simply better.

Prediction: Chelsea 2-1 Tottenham.
