Man City Team News vs Aston Villa: Erling Haaland Ready for Return
Manchester City should have Erling Haaland back in the starting side for the trip to Aston Villa, and that is the headline. Enzo Maresca rotated in midweek, protected key players and now waits on three late fitness decisions before settling on his team for Villa Park.
Haaland had been seen limping after the recent win over Ipswich, which raised the usual noise around his availability. Maresca has now shut that down. “Erling is the only one 100 per cent available,” he said, a clear indication that the striker is fit and ready to lead the line from the start.
The uncertainty sits elsewhere. Nico O’Reilly, Matheus Nunes and Mateo Kovacic are all carrying knocks and all face checks ahead of kick-off. Maresca kept it simple: “We have a session this afternoon. They can be all available or not. Yesterday they were all improving, and we’ll see this afternoon.” That is not theatre. It is where things stand.
Erling Haaland Boost for Man City
Haaland changes the picture immediately. City can manage without a lot of players, few sides can casually replace a striker of his output. His return gives structure to the attack and clarity to everyone behind him. There is no need to overcomplicate it, if Haaland is fit, he starts.
Behind him, Phil Foden made a strong case to keep his place after a midweek hat-trick. He looks the obvious option in the No 10 role, though Rayan Cherki is expected to come back into the side and offers Maresca another decision. If Cherki starts centrally, Foden can shift left. Iliman Ndiaye looks the likely option on the other flank.

One forward option who will not feature is Antoine Semenyo. The knee injury he suffered against Ipswich is expected to keep him out for around eight weeks, which removes one of the more direct attacking alternatives from the squad.
Enzo Maresca Awaits Midfield Verdict
Midfield is less settled. Elliot Anderson and Enzo Fernandez are expected to continue at the base, largely because the alternatives may not be ready. Kovacic and Nunes have both been dealing with knocks, and O’Reilly is in the same category. If none of the three make it, Maresca has fewer options for rotation and game management.
That could also affect the full-back positions. Josko Gvardiol started in O’Reilly’s place in midweek and should continue on the left. Maresca appeared relaxed about the issue Gvardiol picked up late in that game, so there is little reason to expect a change there.
On the right, Rayan Ait-Nouri may get a rare start if Nunes is not passed fit. It would not be a surprise. City have had to patch around injuries in recent weeks, and this is another case of availability dictating selection.
Predicted Man City XI vs Aston Villa
There is no mystery around the shape. It should be a 4-2-3-1, with Haaland up top and Foden, Cherki and Ndiaye supporting him. The bigger issue is whether Maresca gets one or two of his doubtful midfielders back in time.
Predicted Manchester City XI: Donnarumma, Ait-Nouri, Dias, Guehi, Gvardiol, Fernandez, Anderson, Foden, Cherki, Ndiaye, Haaland.
Doubts remain over O’Reilly, Nunes and Kovacic. Semenyo is out. The rest is straightforward. If City get the version of Haaland they usually get, they will back themselves against anyone, including an Aston Villa side that rarely make life easy at Villa Park.
