Chelsea vs Tottenham: Mike Penders Ready for Premier League Test
Chelsea are going with Mike Penders against Tottenham on Saturday. It is a big call, though not a reckless one. With Emi Martinez sidelined after jaw surgery, the 21-year-old is set for his first Premier League start and a proper examination of whether Chelsea’s faith in him is justified.
Penders already made history of sorts when he came on in the 2-0 win at Everton, becoming Chelsea’s youngest-ever Premier League goalkeeper. Context matters, of course. Coming off the bench is one thing, starting a London derby is another. Still, the club clearly believe he is more than an emergency option. They see him as a reliable deputy now and a possible long-term No 1 later.
Martinez’s absence leaves no room for dithering. The Argentine was forced off after a nasty collision at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, received lengthy treatment and was taken to hospital. Chelsea now need stability in goal, and Penders gets the shirt.

Midfield Balance Gives Chelsea Control
Further forward, the interesting part is not who plays, but why. Chelsea have won back-to-back league matches by a combined 7-1, with Jordan Henderson and Moises Caicedo operating as the midfield double pivot. Henderson is 36 and no longer covers ground like a machine, but football is not always about legs. Sometimes it is about order, positioning and knowing when not to do something stupid. Alongside him, Caicedo supplies the running and bite.
That pairing is expected to stay in place against Spurs. Ahead of them, Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro and Morgan Rogers look the obvious front three. Rogers, signed in the summer for £117million, is still settling, though the structure around him helps.
Pedro Neto Role Could Stay Unchanged
One of Xabi Alonso’s smarter recent tweaks has been Pedro Neto at right wing-back. He scored both goals against Everton, which tends to strengthen a manager’s conviction. Expect Neto to keep that role.

At centre-back, Wesley Fofana has been left out for the last two matches. Josh Acheampong, a Cobham product Alonso rates highly, is pushing hard to keep his place. Levi Colwill should again feature, and Chelsea have looked more coherent with simpler choices in defence.
Injury News Before Stamford Bridge Clash
There are still fitness issues to manage. Malo Gusto has recovered from illness and is available. Pep Chavarria is not. He travelled to Merseyside and was due to start last week before a minor training injury ruled him out, and this game comes too soon. Reece James remains out until January after knee surgery.
Jamie Gittens is sidelined with an ankle injury suffered on England Under-21 duty. Emmanuel Emegha has had a setback in training and will not be involved either.
The likely Chelsea side looks straightforward: Penders in goal, Caicedo and Henderson in midfield, Palmer and Rogers supporting Joao Pedro. Not glamorous, not complicated, just what Chelsea need right now.
