Tottenham Transfer Latest: Barcelona and Napoli Circle Lucas Bergvall Amid James Maddison Injury Worry

Tottenham’s midfield depth has been a talking point for much of the season, but fresh reporting suggests it may soon come under even greater scrutiny. According to TEAMTALK, Barcelona and Napoli are both monitoring Lucas Bergvall, while Spurs are also waiting for clarity on James Maddison after his latest injury setback.

It is a development that touches two important themes at once for Tottenham, squad planning and availability. Bergvall’s situation has carried intrigue for some time. The Sweden international was open to leaving during the summer window, before being persuaded to remain in north London. Since then, opportunities in the Premier League have been limited, with only two starts to his name.

That lack of regular involvement could become increasingly significant. Tottenham strengthened heavily in central areas over the summer, bringing in Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, and competition for places has intensified as both have made a positive impression in recent outings. With multiple options now available to Roberto De Zerbi, the route to consistent minutes for Bergvall looks far from straightforward.

Barcelona Interest Builds Around Bergvall

Barcelona’s long-standing admiration for Bergvall has resurfaced, while Napoli are also credited with interest. The Italian side are understood to be less advanced in their thinking, with any move described as difficult, particularly after the midfielder recently signed a new Tottenham contract. That naturally strengthens Spurs’ position and gives them control over any future decision.

Still, external attention is unlikely to disappear if playing time remains scarce. Bergvall is viewed as a player of high ceiling and technical quality, traits that fit the profile admired by elite European clubs. Tottenham may have little desire to entertain offers, but these situations can evolve quickly if a young player sees his pathway narrowing.

Maddison Injury Leaves Spurs Waiting

Alongside that transfer subplot, Tottenham are assessing Maddison after he was forced off during the 2-0 win over Chelsea. The timing is unfortunate. After a knee injury wiped out most of last season and a shoulder issue disrupted the early part of this campaign, Maddison had only just returned to the starting line-up.

His impact had been immediate, scoring in the 3-1 win over Coventry before starting again against Chelsea. Any absence now would be a setback both for the player and for Tottenham, who rely on his creativity between the lines.

De Zerbi said: “I hope he didn’t feel a big problem, but we have to make a medical check.

“We need to do the medical check tomorrow, after tomorrow, I don’t know. I hope it’s not a big problem because he’s a special player for us. We need him.”

For now, Spurs wait on the medical outcome, while Bergvall’s future is likely to remain under watch. With Barcelona interest revived and midfield competition fierce, Tottenham may soon need to make an important call on one of their most promising young players.

Our View

This is exactly the sort of report that creates unease, because it touches on two weak points at once. If Maddison is facing another spell out, Tottenham lose one of the few midfielders who can genuinely change the rhythm of a match with one pass or one clever movement. Even when the squad looks stocked in numbers, replacing that sort of influence is never simple.

Then there is Bergvall. Keeping talented young players happy becomes much harder when the pathway looks blocked. If Barcelona are watching and Napoli are circling, that tells you plenty about the level of talent Spurs have on their hands. It would be deeply frustrating if Tottenham did the hard part by securing him, only to let his development stall through lack of minutes.

The club have built a crowded midfield, which sounds healthy on paper, but balance matters more than quantity. If Maddison misses time and Bergvall remains on the fringes, the conversation quickly turns from depth to mismanagement. Spurs need to be careful here.

The ideal outcome is obvious. Maddison’s injury proves minor, Bergvall gets meaningful opportunities, and Tottenham avoid creating an unnecessary transfer story around a player they should be nurturing. Because once clubs like Barcelona sense uncertainty, the noise only grows louder. Spurs have enough on their plate without letting a controllable situation drift into a bigger problem.
