Tottenham tracking Otavio as goalkeeper transfer picture becomes clearer
Tottenham Hotspur are keeping a close watch on Cruzeiro goalkeeper Otavio, with fresh reporting from TeamTalk outlining why the Brazil international has become one of the more intriguing young names in the market.
The 20-year-old has risen quickly in Brazil after stepping into the side following an injury to Cássio. Since then, he has “established himself as the club’s regular starter” and his progress has drawn substantial attention from across Europe. Tottenham and Nottingham Forest are both understood to have scouted him, while Napoli, FC Porto and Borussia Dortmund are also tracking developments.
There is already evidence of serious interest. Forest previously made an offer “which totalled at around €13million (£11m)”, but Cruzeiro considered that insufficient and talks went no further. That stance tells its own story about how highly the Brazilian club rate Otavio.
Otavio valuation shapes Tottenham transfer plan
Cruzeiro have positioned themselves strongly. The goalkeeper signed a new contract until 2031 in August, with a “€100million (£84m) release clause for foreign clubs” inserted. Sources indicate any buying club would not necessarily need to meet that full figure, but it would still take “an initial fee in the region of €25-30million (£21-25m) before the Brazilian outfit will open serious negotiations”.
That creates an important layer in Tottenham’s thinking. This is no bargain-market opportunity, and any move would require conviction that Otavio can develop into a genuine Premier League No.1.
Cruzeiro goalkeeper earning wider European attention
The profile is easy to understand. Otavio has been praised for “shot-stopping ability, distribution and composure under pressure”, attributes that regularly feature high on recruitment lists for clubs seeking modern goalkeepers. He has also “earned a senior call-up to the Brazil national team and made his debut in a friendly against Australia”.
For now, the situation remains at the monitoring stage. As reported, “any movement is scouting and tracking” and Cruzeiro are under no immediate pressure to sell. Still, with a move to a major European league said to be on his radar, the next two windows could become significant.
Our View
This feels like the sort of move that makes sense if Tottenham are genuinely planning ahead rather than simply reacting to the next market opening. Otavio sounds like a talent with serious upside, and the detail that keeps standing out is the breadth of interest around him. When clubs from England, Italy, Portugal and Germany are all checking the same goalkeeper, there is usually something substantial behind it.
The price is where it gets interesting. £21-25m as a serious negotiation point for a 20-year-old keeper from Brazil is not small money, even in this market. It would demand a clear strategy, patience and confidence in the recruitment team. If Spurs see him as a long-term first choice, then moving early can often be smarter than waiting until the valuation climbs again.
There is also something encouraging in the description of his game. Composure, distribution and shot-stopping are exactly what is needed in the Premier League, especially for a side that wants to control matches and build from the back. A young goalkeeper arriving from South America would still need adaptation time, but the ceiling sounds high.
The key now is whether this remains background scouting or turns into something firmer. Tottenham have been linked with plenty over the years, but this one has the shape of a move worth watching closely.
