Two Chelsea stars could return in time for Liverpool cup clash

Chelsea Injury News Ahead of Liverpool Carabao Cup Clash

Chelsea go to Anfield with a problem that is simple enough to understand. They have injuries in key areas, they have a suspension to deal with and they are coming off a poor 2-0 defeat to Tottenham at Stamford Bridge. Momentum can disappear quickly in football, and that is exactly what has happened here.

Back-to-back wins after the international break had improved the mood. Then came the loss to Spurs, and with it a fresh wave of concern around availability. Xabi Alonso now has to prepare for a Carabao Cup tie against Liverpool, followed almost immediately by a league game against Manchester United. Squad management matters, but so does simply having enough reliable bodies fit and available.

The biggest issue is not one injury, it is the number of them. Chelsea are missing senior players, they are waiting on scan results in one case, and they have another first-team regular serving a suspension. That leaves little room for rotation and even less room for error.

Joao Pedro Doubt Leaves Chelsea Short Up Front

The most immediate concern is Joao Pedro. His absence against Tottenham was unexpected and left Chelsea short of options in attack. Morgan Rogers led the line, with Geovany Quenda brought into the front line, while other attacking alternatives stayed out of the starting picture. That told its own story.

Alonso explained that the Brazilian picked up the issue in training at Cobham on Friday. The exact problem remains unclear because swelling initially prevented proper checks. “We don’t know yet because he has a lot of fluid.

“He felt it yesterday and we need to wait probably until tomorrow to do the test and to know the whole situation and the whole seriousness of the injury. We will know soon enough.”

That is not ideal language before a cup tie at Anfield. Joao Pedro has already had knee trouble this season, missed the defeat at Brentford and saw a specialist during the international break. When a player has a recurring issue in the same area, clubs are careful for good reason. Right now, there is no confirmed return date, and that usually means caution rather than optimism.

Emi Martinez and Reece James Absences Hurt Spine

In goal, Chelsea remain without Emi Martinez. The goalkeeper suffered a fractured jaw after a heavy clash of heads in the 2-0 win at Everton and required surgery. It was a serious incident, and while his recovery is moving in the right direction, he is still some way from a return.

Alonso said: “Emi is doing better. He had the surgery and day by day he is feeling better, but we still need to wait.

“A few weeks. Hopefully, less than more, but we need to wait.

“The good thing is that he is feeling better and we need to listen to his feelings, the opinions of the doctors, the specialists, the surgeons. Considering it was a bad one, he is doing good.”

That means Mike Penders is likely to continue in goal. Fine in theory, but there is a difference between stepping in for one match and becoming the default option in a demanding run of fixtures.

Then there is Reece James, and this is familiar territory for all the wrong reasons. He first missed the Brentford defeat because of a hamstring problem, then suffered a knee issue after returning to training. Surgery followed, described as minor, but the expected recovery time is around three months. Mid-January is the current target.

Chelsea lose more than a captain when James is unavailable. They lose control on the right side, quality in possession and one of the few defenders in the squad who can consistently progress play under pressure. Levi Colwill and Moises Caicedo have both worn the armband in his absence, but replacing his profile is harder than replacing his title.

Cole Palmer Suspension Adds to Chelsea Selection Headache

As if the injury list were not enough, Chelsea are also without Cole Palmer after his late red card against Tottenham. Two yellow cards, one suspension, one more problem for Alonso. Palmer has often been the player who gives structure to Chelsea’s attacking play, whether through final passes, tempo or simply taking responsibility in difficult moments.

Take him out of the team and the burden shifts elsewhere, probably onto Rogers, Quenda and the midfield unit behind them. Against Liverpool, that is asking a lot. Anfield is not the place to search for fluency while undermanned.

Pep Chavarria may at least offer one piece of better news. The left-sided player has missed the last two games after suffering an unspecified knock in training, but he has returned to partial team sessions. Alonso had said before the Tottenham match, “Pep is training a little bit more, but he is not going to make it [for the Tottenham game].” That leaves the door open for his involvement against Liverpool or, at the latest, Manchester United.

Jamie Gittens and Emmanuel Emegha Return Dates Still Unclear

Elsewhere, Chelsea are still waiting on Emmanuel Emegha and Jamie Gittens. Emegha has yet to make his competitive debut after a hamstring injury suffered in the summer. He briefly appeared close to involvement, having been named on the bench in the Carabao Cup against Luton, but he has not featured since and Alonso later confirmed a setback.

His latest update was brief. “He’s feeling better, but we need to wait.” That is manager-speak for no firm timetable. He could return this week, but there is still uncertainty around whether he is genuinely ready for competitive action.

Gittens is on a similar track, though with a different injury. He damaged his ankle while playing for England Under-21s against Kazakhstan and was seen on crutches afterwards. Alonso has consistently described the timeframe as “weeks”, which points more towards early November than an immediate comeback.

So where does that leave Chelsea ahead of the Liverpool game? Short on certainty, short on numbers and under pressure. Joao Pedro is the key name because his availability directly affects how Chelsea function in attack. Palmer being suspended removes creativity. Martinez being out weakens the spine. James remains a long-term absence. The rest are varying degrees of doubtful or not fully ready.

That does not make the tie impossible. It does make it harder. For Chelsea, this is less about excuses and more about arithmetic. Too many missing players, too little margin for error, and a trip to Liverpool at exactly the wrong time.
