Manchester City Lead Mathis Albert Chase as Borussia Dortmund Resist Interest

Manchester City are currently viewed as the club best placed to sign Borussia Dortmund winger Mathis Albert, with TeamTalk reporting that the Premier League champions have already made a formal approach and remain the most committed suitors.

The 17-year-old has become one of the more closely watched young attackers in Europe. Albert, a United States international, has seen limited first-team involvement under Niko Kovač this season, and that has naturally encouraged elite clubs to track his situation with growing interest.

City’s intent appears serious. The report states that they are “willing to offer lucrative personal terms to Albert” as they look to position themselves strongly in the event Dortmund become open to a deal. There is also a financial framework to the chase, with sources indicating City were prepared to meet “a valuation in the region of €20million (£16.7m / $22.3m)”.

Mathis Albert transfer interest grows

Chelsea remain part of the picture. Their interest is described as long-standing and they were also ready to commit a similar fee last winter. Paris Saint-Germain previously made contact in summer 2025, approaching then sporting director Sebastian Kehl, although that enquiry went no further.

Arsenal and Liverpool are also said to be monitoring Albert closely. Even so, the current view is clear, City are “better placed to secure his signature should Dortmund ever soften their stance”.

That caveat matters. Dortmund have “so far rebuffed all approaches for Albert, including loan enquiries” and the Bundesliga side continue to insist that the teenager remains central to their plans. Internally, there appears to be little panic. Club figures are calm about his pathway, citing both his long-term contract position and the belief that his minutes will rise as the campaign progresses.

Borussia Dortmund stance remains firm

Albert joined Dortmund from the LA Galaxy academy in 2024 and quickly established a reputation as one of the brightest American prospects in the European game. He has already become one of the youngest Americans to feature in the Bundesliga, and he has also scored at senior international level for the United States.

There is, however, a structural element that could shape the timing of any move. “Premier League rules also prevent clubs from signing Albert permanently until he turns 18 in May.” With his current contract running until June next year, Dortmund have prepared an extension offer and continue to present his current role as part of a measured progression plan.

If his game time does not increase, the market is likely to become more aggressive next summer. For now, City appear to be at the front of that queue, and their early work may yet prove significant.

Our View

This feels exactly like the kind of move worth watching closely. City have built so much of their recent success on elite recruitment, and when they move early on a player of this profile it usually means the internal conviction is strong. A “formal approach” is not background noise, it suggests groundwork has already been laid and the club see something more than potential.

The interesting part is the combination of patience and readiness. If City are genuinely willing to offer “lucrative personal terms”, then they clearly believe Mathis Albert has the ceiling to justify that level of commitment. At 17, that says plenty. It also helps that he is a left-sided attacker with international experience already, because those are not easy profiles to find at this age.

There is always a question with young talents leaving Dortmund too soon. Minutes matter, rhythm matters, and pathways matter. If Albert stays and plays more, Dortmund’s argument holds up. If he remains on the fringes, pressure will grow quickly and City should be in a very strong position.

Chelsea being keen is no surprise, Arsenal and Liverpool watching is no surprise either. The key point is who look most prepared when the door opens. Right now, it sounds like City. That is encouraging, because this is exactly the sort of deal that can look smart for years if handled properly.
