“I feel sorry for the players” – Former Liverpool midfielder defends Manchester City stars

Exclusive: Don Hutchison Shares His Thoughts On Man City’s Potential Punishment

Top of the Premier League table. Set to face Bradford City at home in the Carabao Cup quarter-final. Two wins out of three in the Champions League.

On the pitch, everything is going well for Manchester City. But that doesn’t even begin to paint the full picture at the Etihad right now.

The club have been found guilty of 114 financial breaches by the Premier League and are now facing punishments we have never seen before in English football.

Massive points deductions. Relegation. Stripping of titles. They have all been named as potential repercussions.

Quite frankly, no punishment will be big enough for the injustice they have served teams up and down the football pyramid. Not just the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United have been impacted by this – the landscape of English football has been altered entirely.

Former Liverpool midfielder Don Hutchison spoke exclusively to EPL Index, courtesy of BetBrain, and shared his thoughts on the situation…

“I Actually Feel Sorry For The Players”

When asked what punishments Man City should face, Hutchison remained unsure.

“It’s one of them where everything just changes every five minutes,” he said.

“You go, ‘Put them in League Two,’ and then you go, ‘You can’t put them in League Two because Haaland will go, Donnarumma will go.’

“Then you go, ‘Yeah, but as it stands they’ve cheated the system for nine years,’ and you ask what the punishment is. It just seems to be going round and round and round,” he continued.

“I actually feel sorry for the players more than anything because everyon’s saying Kevin De Bruyne’s legacy is being tarnished and Sergio Aguero’s. It’s not really their fault. It’s the hierarchy that’s to blame.”

“Yes, the players were bought, but in terms of being a human and being a professional footballer, Man City, like Liverpool over the last 10 years, have produces some of the best football that we’ve seen for ages.”

“So I do feel a little bit sorry for the players that are trying to play, especially the current squad, because what’s happened has got nothing to do with them really.”

“The punishment? I go round in houses every single time. I’m really struggling with it.”

Looking Ahead

Manchester City have already confirmed their appeal against the decision. So for now, their attention remains solely on the football pitch.

They face Brighton at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday as they look to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table. That game is followed by two tricky away tests at Nottingham Forest and RB Leipzig.

But who knows where this story ends up? Will Man City even be playing their football in the Premier League next season? Hopefully we know the answers sooner rather than later…
