Chelsea Injury Boost as Emiliano Martinez Targets Early Return
Chelsea may have some welcome relief in goal. According to Standard Sport, there is growing optimism that Emiliano Martinez could return sooner than first expected after suffering a broken jaw.
The injury came during Chelsea’s 2-0 win at Everton, when Martinez collided with Jarrad Branthwaite and had to be stretchered off at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. He has already undergone surgery and had previously said he would be “back in a few weeks”, a timeline that Xabi Alonso also supported before the defeat to Tottenham.
Now, the mood appears more positive. That matters because Martinez has quickly become an important figure since joining from Aston Villa for £7.5million in the summer. He had started six straight Premier League matches before being ruled out, and Chelsea’s defensive record suggests his absence has been felt. One clean sheet this season is not the profile of a side fully in control.

In the meantime, Mike Penders has been thrown into the deep end. The 21-year-old Belgian started the 2-0 loss to Tottenham and then featured in the Carabao Cup exit to Liverpool, where he did some good work in the shootout, including saving Ryan Gravenberch’s penalty. That said, goalkeeping is a job where mistakes stay on the scoreboard. His own goal against Spurs, when he punched Mateus Fernandes’ corner into his own net, was the kind of error that changes games and shapes narratives.
Chelsea host Manchester United on Saturday, and Penders is expected to keep his place. If Martinez does beat the original recovery schedule, Alonso will take it. There is no mystery here. Experience, authority and reliability in goal still matter, especially for a team sitting fifth and still searching for defensive consistency.
Our View
This is the sort of update that can shift the mood quickly. Chelsea have looked like a team with attacking ideas and decent control in phases, but there is still too much noise around the back line. A settled goalkeeper helps calm all of that down. Martinez has brought presence, edge and the kind of conviction that defenders respond to immediately.
Penders deserves some patience. He is young, talented and was asked to step in under pressure. One bad moment against Tottenham should not define him, and the penalty save against Liverpool showed character. Still, the reality is obvious. Chelsea need certainty in big moments, and Martinez offers more of it right now.
Fifth place means there is something to build on, but the margins are tight. Dropped points in this league add up fast, and if Chelsea are serious about pushing higher, the defence has to stop giving games away. Getting Martinez back ahead of schedule would feel like more than an injury boost. It would give the side a firmer spine for the run ahead.
There is also something encouraging in the fact that the recovery seems to be progressing well. That usually reflects a player determined to get back quickly and a medical team doing its job. Chelsea need both. With Manchester United next and tougher weeks ahead, any sign of stability is welcome.
