Liverpool star could be set for €40m Saudi move

Jeremie Frimpong and Al-Hilal Interest Raises Fresh Liverpool Questions

Liverpool may already have a decision to make on Jeremie Frimpong, and it is an awkward one. According to WinWin via Goal, the Dutch full-back has been proposed to Al-Hilal as the Saudi Pro League side weigh up potential additions. That matters because Frimpong only arrived in the summer of 2025, signed for €40 million from Bayer Leverkusen to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold after his move to Real Madrid.

On paper, it made sense. Frimpong came with pedigree, end product and top-level experience from a Leverkusen side that swept through Germany. In practice, Liverpool have not seen enough of that player. He has shown flashes, but flashes are not what a club of this size pays for. Availability matters, consistency matters, and in his first season at Anfield he had too little of both.

Al-Hilal Move Gains Relevance

The key point in this report is simple, Frimpong is said to be receptive to a move to Saudi Arabia less than two years into his contract. That is quick. It also tells you plenty. Players do not usually start considering an exit this early unless they feel the situation is going nowhere, or unless the financial package and fresh start are very attractive.

Al-Hilal being offered the player through intermediaries suggests this is not idle chatter. It sounds like groundwork. Liverpool now need to decide whether this is a player worth persevering with, or an asset they can still move on before his value drops further.

Injuries Have Shaped Frimpong at Liverpool

This has not been a clean run. Frimpong made 35 appearances in all competitions in his first campaign, with only 21 of those in the Premier League and no league goals. His two goals came in the Community Shield against Crystal Palace and in the FA Cup. For an attacking full-back signed to bring thrust and incision, that return is underwhelming.

The bigger issue is rhythm. He has repeatedly had that broken by injuries. The latest setback, a muscular problem suffered shortly after coming on at half-time in the 2-1 win over Brentford on October 17, sums up the pattern. You cannot build form if you are always restarting from zero.

Netherlands Setback Adds Pressure

Club problems have spilled into international football. Frimpong has 15 senior caps for the Netherlands, but he was left out of the 2026 World Cup squad by Ronald Koeman because of concerns over form. That omission has carried on under current head coach Xavi, who has also overlooked him for the November fixtures against Greece and Germany.

That compounds the sense that Frimpong is drifting rather than driving his career forward. For Liverpool, who travel to Crystal Palace without him again this weekend, the coming international break gives him time to recover. It may also give all parties time to think seriously about a January exit.

If Al-Hilal follow through, Liverpool will need to be ruthless. Sometimes a signing simply does not land. Frimpong still has obvious talent, but talent alone does not rescue a transfer. Output, fitness and fit do.

Our View

There is still a feeling that this one should not be written off too quickly. Frimpong arrived with a real track record and a style that looked ideal for Liverpool. He was explosive, brave in possession and productive in dangerous areas. Those qualities do not just disappear. What has disappeared is momentum, and that can change if he gets healthy and gets a proper run.

It would be frustrating to see him leave before the club ever got the best version of him. Injuries have wrecked the flow of his time at Anfield, and once a player starts chasing fitness every few weeks, confidence goes with it. That does not mean the original judgement was wrong. It may simply mean the timing has been rotten.

If there is a serious Saudi offer, Liverpool have to assess it properly. There is no point clinging to a player who already has one eye on the exit. But if this is more tentative than concrete, patience may still be the smarter call. A fully fit Frimpong still looks like someone who could thrive in an aggressive, front-foot side.

The hope is that the next few weeks bring clarity. Either he recommits, gets fit and proves why Liverpool wanted him, or the club moves decisively and reinvests. Drifting in between helps nobody.
