Premier League January Transfer Window Roundup & Analysis

The January transfer window is now closed, Sky Sports News are reporting a total spend of £127.8m by Premier League clubs. This is more than double the 2012 January transfer window but around half of the spend from 2011 – although that was largely due to Chelsea and Liverpool spending over £100m between them!

The graph below shows the total incoming and outgoing players for each club, QPR were the busiest club with 11 players out and 6 players in.  Freeing up wages is a vital task for Premier League clubs and you’ll notice that most clubs had more players going out than coming in.  Liverpool bought two players but those players were mainly paid for by freeing up space in the wage bill, Joe Cole being the biggest earner to leave Liverpool in January.  West Brom and Manchester City did not bring any players in but both clubs let 5 players leave.  Manchester United also seemed to loan a lot of players out too (as reported by the Telegraph). Only five teams had a higher amount of players transferred in than out (Fulham, Newcastle, Reading, West Ham & Wigan).

EPL January Transfer window 2013 in's and outs

Sky Sports News’s reported spend was in fact a gross spend of £127.8m for all Premier League Clubs in the January transfer window.  As always, the media likes to hype up the spend, even if the net spend is far less.

The proportions are in the Pie Chart below. Newcastle have been reported to be the big spenders with 18% of the total and £22.4m spent, closely followed by QPR & Liverpool (as mentioned above only gross spending was reported by Sky Sports News and sales were not included).

Premier League Team Spending January 2013 Transfer Window

The table below shows the total net spend for each club as well as the number of players being bought and sold in January 2013.  Newcastle United, Queens Park Rangers and Liverpool were the big spenders, accounting for half of the total transfer window spend.

This does not show the income from saving the wage bill for loaning players out or cancelling their contract / free transfer.  Football clubs work like any business, if they can remove some of the outgoings, they have more room to spend on incomings.  For example if a player was on £100,000 per week on a 3 year contract but was a free transfer he would be more expensive (£15,6m) than a player who cost £2m on £50,000 per week over the course of the contracts (£9.8m).
